Have a whine even with GLI with IPOD Setup??

Hey Guys,

I got my SNHOND3 hooked up today and have a question to why I still have a whine in my stereo. I have the SNHOND3 in back of the console connected to a GLI from Radio Shack with the wire running the length of the console hooked up to the female A/V ends underneath the armrest exiting right below the cigarette lighter. While driving I noticed the hissing which should have been taken care by the GLI?? This is while the IPOD is running on the battery. Could I have a bad GLI? Shoudln't it be taking care of the hiss? It is really annoying, I would appreciate the help.

Thanks

engine noise is caused by a few different causes, and GLI's are not magic.

For one thing, the Airbag ECE seems to emit engine noise, and when I have sat a GLI on top of the airbag ECU (the box with all the yellow harnesses, blow the radio, and forward of the OEM amp in a TSX), I ahve gotten noise, and when I moved it far enough away from the ECU, it went away.

So that's my first concern - the physical location of the SHOND and GLI relative to that box.

You MIGHT have a bad GLI... but check this out first.

Let us know what you find...

Right now both my GLI and SNHOND3 are below the radio. Do they have to be separated? Should I run another cable from the SNHOND3 so it would allow me to position the GLI further away from the radio/amp? Maybe more towards the cupholder since I have the A/V plugs below the armrest?

For testing purposes you should TRY getting the GLI as far from the Airbag ECU as you an, just by lifting it up in the air after you've taken the console apart. This kind of test made a noticeable diff in two cars I've worked on.

If that test seems to give good results I'd try repositioning the gear.

I am not too sure where the Airbag ECU is so I guess next weekend when I take the part again I will move the GLI around and see what it does.

Thanks ELDuderino.

I can tell you that the GLI from radio shack is pretty much a piece of garbage and will not solve your problem. I see you're from Central Jersey, any chance you can stop by so I can hear what you are hearing? If you can't get rid of it, I have a filter that I know will work

StreetEffectz,

Thanks for the reply. Where is you shop located? I am right around Red Bank/Middletown. If you have hours on Saturdays I could come up then. If you know of a better GLI I would be interested in it if after I reposition the GLI it doesn't work.

I don't like that radioshack one. It's pretty crappy.

Let me know once you move it. I really don't think it's going to matter though. We are up in Woodbridge, about 25 minutes away from you. We are open 10 - 6 on Saturday.

Any suggestions for a better one? I have the RadioShack piece and I don't think it did anything. I have mild engine noise on iPod, and pronounced on XM (have a Soundgate switch to flip between the two). It may be proximity to the airbag ECU, but with the SHOND box, the Soundgate switch, a line driver, the GLI, the XM tuner box, and yards of cables, there's not much room back there to avoid it. I may just have to hack off the back of the center compartment so I have more room to work with. Here's a ghetto-tastic question, is there any way to shield the stuff from the ECU? Maybe wrap it all in tinfoil? I almost don't want to listen to XM because of the engine noise, and it's a shame, because the rest of the install is so trick.

PS, a brick and mortar source for the GLI is preferrable, since I don't really have a good mailing address for internet orders right now, but I'll take what suggestions I can get.

I actually got mine from CircuitCity. You might want to try there. A lot of the high end car stereo shops should have a good one too.

Maybe Elduderino has some good suggestions for other places though.

Never found a GLI I liked, found plenty I hated (TRC, etc.) but I'd actually had a good run with the Radio Shack unit. I was surprised to see it criticized, but then, I know they change vendors all the time and have more than one supplier for a SKU like that, so who knows if Ron and I had even seen the same unit.

I tried the "high-end" Navone and Clark inspired GLI from Monster 10 years ago... was a total POS. Hated it.

I am kinda interested in trying out the Jenson ISO-MAX CL-RR2 that Derrick mentioned... but I tend to be very attitudinal about noise - in that I beleive I can get rid of it without a GLI 9 times out of 10. But with these AUX adapters taht pull power and gnd from the bus connector it's a lot harder to suggest wiring tricks and tests on a forum... too many years of doing it in person and on the phone...

Alright guys an update. I pulled out the bin yesterday, started up the car, and started moving the GLI around. The GLI was a bit above the amplifier (I am guessing that is what it is, below the bin). As soon as I moved the GLI the whine went away. Eventually I placed it to the upper left of the bin. Thats where it was picking up the least engine noise. If anyone is having a problem with picking up engine noise, I would definately tell them to move the GLI around to see if it would be better in another location.

Thanks for the help everyone.
