Has anyone done this....

I installed an amp and sub to the stock system and was looking at the stock sub location and wondered if anyone bothered making some minor modifications to the torsion bar? Basically, as I see it anyway, the torsion bar mounts to a metal bar with a little plastic clip just underneath the sub. Has anyone cut away that bar and just found another method of holding up the torsion bar at that point? I think that if I was to do this mod, I could put a 10" or maybe a 12" sub in the stock location and not worry about mounting depths. Just have to make sure the sub is designed for free air and not meant to be enclosed.

Any thoughts?!

you are definitely on to something because when i was in the trunk two days ago installing my sub enclosure I looked up at the factory sub location and thought the very same thing. You could make a bracket out of a strong metal strip that would be essentially in the shape of a "Z" but with a straight middle instead of on an angle. The bottom of the bracket would hold the plastic clip for the torsion bars and the strap would be attached with a screw through the top part of the "Z"and into the metal underneath the rear shelf, just next to the sub hole, which hole you could enlarge first.

replace the bars with pneumatic lifts...why not, since the rear seat cushions do not fold forward anyways.

Well I removed the metal bracket that sits just under the sub location. It was spot welded into 4 locations so I drilled them out and removed the bar with no problem. I left the torsion bars alone and all works fine. I can now mount a sub in the stock location without worrying about mounting depth.

The only issue I have now is that the diameter of the hole is too small to fit a 10". It measure approx. 8 1/2". In order to fit a 10" I would have to make the hole larger by approx 1/2". I really don't want to do that. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could mount a 10" there?

Thanks!

How about a spacer between the top of deck and speaker flange. Might have trouble with the grill fitting back on though.

I want it to fit in nice and snug in the stock location. I want to be able to cover it with grill. The only way I can achieve this is to cut the hole bigger!
