Got a question about my SUB.
Hi, I am running a 250/1 JL amp and a 10w3v2 sub. I am running this setup on my stock 03 TL-S deck. Whenever I pop my trunk open while playing music, it sounds like crap. It sounds like my sub is farting. any reason how to fix this? Is it because my setting is messed up? thx

could bethe amp needs to be tuned up... however, it could just be because there is nothing for the sound to bounce off of. I remember I had a little bazooka tube in my jeep wrangler a while back (chill out, i know its junk but its all that would fit). Anyway, the thing was crap in the summer, especially when the top was down. However, when i put the hard top on that fall, the thing pounded like you wouldn't believe. It had more space to bounce of all the walls and back glass instead of nothing but the back of the seat and the trunk hatch (hollow steel). You might just be hearing the sound all pour out of the trunk when its open.
I'd say fold down your rear seats and then if it still sounds strange then you might have a problem. try turning down the gain on the amp as a starter.

flatten out your bass in your head unit (and pump up the treb... thats the point of the interior speakers and having a sub do the work for the bass). then i'd try turning down the gain to like 60% for starters.
any chance you can take some up close pics of the amp controls?

Are your rear 6x9's still connected? First try disconnecting them (but leave the LOC connected since it'll still get signal) so you don't clip the signal
1. Turn the gain on your amp all the way down
2. Turn your volume to max
3. Turn up the gain slowly, as soon as your hear clipping, turn it a notch down (or lower if its too much bass)
4. Filter Freq to ~80hz
5. Boost between +3 and +7
You don't need to set the preamp output section, that's only if you bridge that amp to another amp.
edit:
this might help
try it out
or you can wait till the next meet and ill do it for ya

+1, flatten it out.
also if tuning it doesnt make the slightest difference, try a different box

Depending on what JL box you havem they are made with their w3 subs in mind so I wouldn't try changing the box yet.
Also, if you really have everything set to high (amp level, bass, and LOC), you are probably creating an ass load of distortion and are lucky if you haven't damaged the sub. If you really need to do that to get bass your happy with, one 10" with 250 watts is probably not sufficient for you. I have the exact same setup (250/1 and 10w3) and I love it, but I am not trying to wake the dead with it.

You guys are silly!
It should sound like crap.
-When you open the trunk you just released the pressure on the front of the woofer. When the woofer moves in and out it needs air pressure on both the front and back of the woofer cone. The rear gets pressure from the enclosure. The front gets pressure from being in a closed trunk.
-When you are standing right in front of a moving subwoofer you hear the noise it makes from moving air. This is called "cone noise".
Have you ever heard subwoofers that are in a sound room from an audio store. They sound great until you're standing right in front of them.
My advice..... keep your trunk closed. You can cause damage to your subwoofer by pushing it that hard with your trunk open.

If his doesn't sound like that with the trunk open then he's not pushing it as hard as you are with the trunk open. Or he has a ported box. When you are pushing a subwoofer nicely and you open the trunk you should hear noise coming off the front of the sub. That's a fact. I've been in this biz for over 10 years.

wait...on the one of it inside the car...was that supposed to sound good? Im sure a compressed vid over the internet does soemthing to SQ, but definately doesnt sound "right" in either video to me.

just realized your in frisco, i work in newark, not sure how your schedule is but if you wanted to hook up sometime around here after i get off work and listen to my system and maybe grab a drink or something let me know. I got some FI audio Qs (there SQ sub), focals in the front, MBs in the rear, and a few alpine amps. Im only running a single 12 so its not quite my "ideal" system, but sounds pretty decent

I saw the same thing.. Was wondering who would point it out..
My settings are flipped compared to his.. My treble is where his bass is at and vice versa.
