I was just about to post some pics as well, but you beat me to it Ron. I love how nice it came out. Alot of shops in my area told me they could not do something like that and I was getting worried, but Streeteffectz came to the rescue

I was wondering that myself after I took the pics...the piece i made matches with the side trim on back, but the cdholder and up looks different, I didn't really notice it in the shop.

Ron, I am about to do a similar instead in my car and i already have a sheet of the ABS plastic wood to make the trim around the head. Just wondering in the job you did what the plastic trim is attached to from behind. I am assuming you modified the facotry head unit metal brackets to attach the head and to get it flush with the front trim, but what did you attach the trim to hold it in place?

yea, my cd holder went back in along with a new head unit. I definitely think it looks better that way for non nav types. the faceplate doesn't look as 'empty' I only wish I could have a faceplate that matches as perfectly as astroboy's in that satin black form. Supposedly he had them pull it all out and repaint.

The trim is attached with abs plastic and an adhesive that is able to peel off if you ever want to remove it.
As for Astroboys dash, thats simple to do too, and making it match perfect is EASY

Ron, I think my question above wasnt clear enough, so let me rephrase it here for you to re-answer: What i wanted to know is what exactly did you attach the trim piece to (you indicated you used adhesive to hold it in place)but you didnt say what is behind it that its stuck to.) Did you bend some backstrap metal into L-brackets near all four corners of the head, so that you had a surface to attach the faceplate to? I will be installing a Premier DEH-P940 which is standard DIN size, so there will be even more space all around the head unit that has to be covered by the trim piece. The ABS plastic sheet with the wood grain on it that i bought is very thin (maybe 1/8th or 3/16ths , so I need to be sure there is enough of something behind it that makes it rigid.

I made ABS spacers that sit the piece out just far enough to make it flush with the rest of the dash. IF you do it right, you can do this directly to the 1/8" wood piece you have and it will be sturdy, works like a charm
The cd holder is done with metal straps that I bent to form to the dash to it held in exactly the same place it did when it was attached to the factory radio.

Ron, thanks for the info. BTW, do you happen to know what brand and/or where that particular car's wood dash trim kit came from so i know where NOT to order it from. :wow: I am serious here: the color doesnt come close to matching the side pieces on the console. {Naturally the trim piece you used matches like a charm!} Do you know whether the kit Tim sells here is worth the extra $40 or $50 more than i've seen them sell for elsewhere on the net? If the color matches, it would certainly be worth the premium. I am aware of about 4 different companies that are actually making the kits, but i dont know which one has the best color match.

I really dont know why the color looks so off in the pictures......Its really not that bad in person. The kit actually matches well with everything else and the cd tray isnt really that red. Maybe it has something to do with how the pieces of the kit have thicker epoxy on them and the piece Ron used is a bit more flat. That might make the light reflect differently??

Do you have an opinion on the difference between trim kits that are covered with epoxy vs. the kit available elsewhere on the 'net that has polyeurothane instead? The seller of the poly kit claims it resists color fade and matches better...but seeing is beleiving.
