Engine noise, how do i get rid of it?

I installed my pioneer avic-d1 and a 4-channel amp (Eclipse 3242) over the weekend. I'm running into some engine noise problems. Anyone had any experience with this or know how to get rid of it? TIA.

1. Did you run your power wire alongside your rca's to the amp?

2. Double check your ground, make sure it has a solid connection.

power wire was run along the drivers side. Rca's along the passenger side.

The ground connection is good too.

Anyone know what the extra thin wire is for, that is wrapped with the Rca's?

Thats to use for the remote turn on for the amps.

For the noise... you are sure the ground is good, and to the frame of the car? Grounding over paint or to sheet metal causes this problem usually. If thats definitely not it, try raising the amp off of wherever its mounted, sometimes just the amp being on metal will do it.

If all else fails you can add a noise suppressor... http://www.electronixwarehouse.com/c...-sup/ans80.htm

maybe a ground loop isolator is needed?

Actually that is a drain wire for noise rejection, try grounding it at each end.

1) Make sure your RCAs are not directional, if they are and you have them reversed it can cause problems.

2) if it does not get louder with the volume it is most likely being induced after the amplifier. Make sure your x-overs (if you have any) and the amp itself are away from noise producers like ecus/pcms and the like and blower motor and other such things

3) It is probably a ground problem somewhere (for the 3rd time, probably at the amp, ck there first)...problem is, EVRYTHING electrical in the car is grounded...start checking them

skgarach, you're getting alternator whine correctly? As in the noise alternates as you rev the engine?

also, where's the best place to ground the amp in the trunk? Right now its grounded to a piece of metal right behind (nearer to the taillights) the trunk access door. From the DIY, i couldn't tell where he grounded his cable.

Good clean metal surface

If you want to be anal use a voltmeter to read what voltage your battery sits at then use a ground that gets you as close to the reading as possible.

So

I know it is not getting louder when you turn the volume up! But does it get louder as the rpm's of the car goes up? If so, it is definately a ground issue! Either a ground loop or something! The ground wire coming off the amp should be as short as possible! Perferably 1.5 -2 feet! As close to that as possible! On the cars these days it doesnt have to be directly to the frame! As a main frame is almost nonexistant on newer cars today! A weld point anywhere on the body is usually fine!!! I did it to a spot weld close to the spare on mine, and I have no noises whatsoever!! I am going to add pictures of my system tomorrow!!

i tried a couple of different grounds yesterday and it didn't make a difference. So for the time being, i just turned down the gain on my amplifier so the noise is less noticeable.

As for the noise, it doesn't increase in volume when the engine is revved, but does increase in frequency and pitch.

I have lowered the gain on the amp and that has helped some, but it is still noticeable at low volumes.

Do you have any other suggestions El Duderino?

I'm not eldude, but....
You can try (for a test) running a ground from the Head unit ground to the amp ground.
Or maybe an inline power filter to the HU?
Or maybe a ground loop isolator if you haven't already.

Good luck!

Hey I just finished installing an Eclipse Nav Unit and 2 amps in my car also. Spent the whole weekend doing this. After the install I'm experiencing really, bad whinning noise. One is under the seat and i've been able to isolate the noise and determined that it's the Amp in the trunk that's creating the alternator noise. I've checked my grounds, and sanded off the paint. I have a 3ft ground connected to the right of my wheelwell. I just unscrewed a bolt and sanded the area. and made sure i used a flat washer. I have been reading that even replacing the rca cables to "zero noise" insulated would help. but that means i'd have to shell out another $100+ for cables that may or may not work. Any help or suggestions is much appreciated.
