Dual Alpine PDXs in a false floor - Photos

Before I started my project to update the car audio setup in my trunk (2002 TL), I browsed the Audio & Video forum for ideas and inspiration. Now I want to repay that by posting pics of my trunk setup, and maybe they too will stir up ideas for new or ongoing car audio projects for other forum members:

• 12” Infinity Kappa Perfect Sub
• Alpine PDX 4.100 amp running two sets of Infinity 6010cs components
• Alpine PDX 1.600 for the Kappa Sub
• Tsunami PP1002TM-CAP 2 Farad Cap
• Dynomat Extreme lining the trunk floor, sides, and underneath the trunk lid
• Recarpeted the trunk interior with black carpet
• Spare tire was kept and is under the false floor

I really like the amp rack and false floor. Very clean. However, that subwoofer thing kills it. That Infinity sub looks like it fell out of the sky and hit your trunk like a meteor...... so you just decided to build around it.

Good job on the amp rack, but I agree with Travis, thats a weird setup for the sub. How does it sound?

Wow, that really is a nice set up. I also noticed the sub location. Looks a little out of place, but if it sounds good and you like it, then that's all that really matters in your custom set up. On the same note, you could have used Travis's sub enclosure with your same built in amp install.

Niiice set up! The sub might look better if there was another one on the other side tho. Sexy amps! Alpine FTW!

Ouch...But you're right. Taking a step back, it really does look like that. Maybe I should add a fog machine to complete the effect. jk. I guess I spent so much time and effort on the false floor that I ignored the sub enclosure. I built that enclosure and was using it for a while before I started the false floor project. But when I realized that the top surface of the false floor was going to be raised more than I expected, I built around my current sub enclosure instead of re-doing the enclosure. I'll make sure the entire sub clears the floor in the new enclosure. I appreciate your honest opinion. BTW, I just visited your website - Those sub enclosures are very nice

It sounds pretty good in my opinion, even with a portion of the sub partially under the false floor. Can't go wrong with 600 RMS watts and dynomat throughout the trunk. Also, the bass sounds much tighter. I can't tell if it's from the dynomat, the extra 275W going to the sub (I previously had a Rockford P325.2), the new shape and reduced size of the airspace of the trunk due to the false floor, or all 3 combined.

Thanks. I wanted to maximize the trunk space at it's widest point (near the trunk opening) so I set up the sub enclosure to the back corner of the trunk. I never use the back of the trunk anyway since I tend to keep items closer to the trunk opening. Also, I wanted to keep the area near the access door between the trunk and the cabin free of obstruction, so that left me the corner of the trunk to work with as an area for the fiberglass enclosure.

Here is the Pioneer D3 I just installed recently. I modified the single-DIN dash kit from my previous setup to what you see in the photo below. I blended the D3 trim with the factory storage pocket above for a cleaner look:

Also, I decided to make a false radio face to cover the D3 when I'm away from the car. I removed the radio face from an old TL radio I bought on eBay and bondo'd the sides to line up with the center console trim:

Here it is installed over the D3 screen. I know that it's odd to have two sets of climate controls showing (one set on the false radio face and the factory set next to my clock), and I may switch out those buttons on the false radio in the future to make it look a little more legit. But, my goal was to have people taking a quick peek in the window see a stock radio in the car.

Or do you have multiple defrosters installed?

That's right. And with the dual circulation, the air coming out of the vents is clean-room quality.

At the time, the cheapest acura radio I could find on ebay (I didn't want to hack up my stock radio) w/o the climate controls was about $150 including shipping. I ended up getting a radio w/ climate controls for $45 including shipping. I was not 100% sure I was going to be successful in creating a good false radio, and being out $45 was not going to hurt too bad. Being out $150 would have knocked the wind out of me.

If you look closely at the false radio, you'll also notice that the color of the LCD screen is a little off. I couldn't remove the LCD screen off the donor radio w/o cracking the glass. So, I cut out a new one out of plexiglass and spray-painted it from the backside.
