I thought about getting one of these but I went with a 10 disc dvd/mp3 changer instead. They are a little pricey but they look cool!

No, you can run it in an SHOND.
From the Kenwood web site describing the KCA-R71FM controller:
Allows Music Keg Preouts to Connect Directly to Head Unit Preamp Inputs
Also, the web page mentions that this controller can run both a Music Keg AND a Sirius satellite tuner at the same time...

i think both of those are ghetto looking.
i have a 20 gig ipod but dont like the idea of having it just sitting there.
i am seriously considering the alpine one, alpine makes a good product,
i dont trust kenwood and know nothing about the other 2 mp3 players.
Anyone know if its possibly to buy additional disks for the alpine model?

I think the Alpine one is just a built in HD. My friend had the older one (a year or so ago). It was really sweet and ripped cds pretty fast - 8 speed I think. It was also very user friendly if you spent enough time to sort all your music

And the control panel you can mount in a DIN spot and although it's not fancy, it's NOT ghetto...

The main reason I posted those players was because you asked for players that could hold more than 16 gigs.
I don't know very much about them other than that.
What kind of car is this going in?

I have the Alpine HDD unit. The user interface just plain sucks compared to the Ipod interface (I don't own one) and the HDD transfer is super slow (USB 1.1 only.) You can only transfer files using their software, which is buggy and crashes often. There isn't much US support for this unit, and I can see why.
On the other hand, the display is superb and the sound quality is classic Alpine.
As for upgrading, it uses a standard 16GB laptop HDD, but either the firmware or software is locked to allow a maximum of 5000 songs, which makes it pretty uesless to upgrade the drive. I tested it with an 80GB HDD and found the 5000 song limit.
Overall, I don't think it's worth it. The UI on the actual head unit isn't that great either; it plays tracks alphabetically -- it won't read the track number from the ID3 tags. May not be a big issue for some, but I like having albums play in order.

i am thinking of just burning mp3 cds to cut my collection in half.
what do you think of this idea?
whats the best software, i clearly deleted my easy cd creator due to the fact that it sucked.

Any burning software should do. I use Nero 6.0 myself, but there are a lot out there.
Going to mp3 discs is a good route I think. I don't know how pratical it is to try to scroll through like 20 gigs of music, when I a lot of times you probably just want to hear some of the latest greatest stuff that you just got. Until better interfaces are developed for a lot of these high storage devices, then I'm trying to wait a little bit.
I'm waiting on the Pioneer Ipod interface but since is going to be so new I have a feeling it will take them a little while to develop the interface. I do like the fact that you can use the Ipod playlists, but I don't like the fact that you'll have to set up the playlist ahead of time. Did anyone here happen to get to use the Pioneer Ipod interface at the CES? Eld, maybe you?
For now I have a mp3 deck in my car and I just label my mp3 discs with the date so I know how recent the music is. I also have a 2pac disc with just about every one of his songs and a slow CD when I'm just chillin'.
I think it's good you wanna go with mp3 discs for now, but I also like the fact you are gonna go with an Alpine deck. Alpine always offers a lot of extra add-ons that you can hook up to the Ai-Net. That way if something good comes out you can always add it on later.

With Nero you can just drag and drop files from your harddrive into the CD project.
If I remember correctly the files have to be stored locally on your hard drive and cannot be stored on a network server. For some strange reason Nero has trouble resolving the network path when you try to drag and drop off of a network drive.

i have one of those alpine hard drives for sale, but its din size, meant to be mounted visable, it comes with aux output, but to change tracks you have to access the front display. or you can combine it with any other deck, but if you use an alpine deck it will fully interface with ai-net
i have that.
if you look up one of the threads i posted, pix done to my car you can see it in action
