Designing a system
Requirements:
$600-700 limit
SQ over SPL
relatively simple install (ie no kickpanels)
sound deadening material (dynamat or something)
i was going to post in jigga's thread since there's good advice flying about in there, but thought i'd avoid the blatant thread-jack. anyway, here's my thoughts so far:
MB Quart RCE 216's for fronts
undetermined 4 channel amp (~75-100 W/channel)
4 channel line driver
8" woofers mounted under the rear deck
taking tuan's suggestions, i'm going to do without rear door speakers for now unless i decide i want more rear fill. i mainly listen to rock/metal/blues, so when it comes to bass, i want something that'll hit nice and tight, but i have no need to go below 40-35 Hz. that's why i'm pretty sure i don't need anything bigger than 8"s. i'm considering finding woofers appropriate for an infinite baffle-type setup so that i can simply enlarge the 6x9 holes, attach a panel of MDF underneath, and screw the woofers into the MDF. sound feasible or should i consider sealed boxes attached to the MDF.
thanks for any suggestions.

would you consider a DIY component set? you'll definitely get the most bang for your buck. depends on how much time you want to put in it. from the list of components it looks like you will be running a passive setup right?

I considered putting these in my car. I had two 10's in my previous car, and didn't like them because I feel 10's are a bit too boomy. I was afraid 8's would be the same. If you go the 8" route, I'll be curious to hear how you like them.

tuan: yeah, the MB's have passive crossovers included. do you really think it's worth the hassle of trying to match a tweeter/6.5" and crossover? i don't want to spend hours playing with different crossover designs... if i get the MB's they already have crossover points optimally selected.
meteorman: so the 10's that you had were also IB? do you think the "boominess" is an unavoidable trait of these woofers?

well, i dont believe any xover pts are optimal in any of those premade sets. speakers xovers from car to car varies, and when you buy a component set w/ those xover points they are usually assumptions. im putting a diy setup together and i like it. =D Its all up to you tho. If those MBs sound good to, go for it!
going active you can tune to your ears liking...which is what i like most

davestar: The 10's I had were in a sealed box. Now, when I said the 10's were boomy, I was comparing them to say, two 12's. But that's just my opinion - I don't want to discourage you from doing this setup. I'm just skeptical about how two 8's will sound, because I have never heard them in person.

tuan (and anyone else interested):
i've been looking into DIY driver/tweeters to see if i could shave a few bucks off my impending purchases. my only previous experience with DIY drivers was in a home theater application, designing and building an enclosure for a 12" subwoofer. the only problem that i see with DIY car stuff is that reviews and discussion are fairly sparse. i know that people like MB Quarts for playing rock/metal, but i don't know what morel, peerless, vifa, etc excel at playing. any resources you can point me to? i've been browsing the forums at www.sounddomain.com and checking out madisound and partsexpress, but mostly all i know is that peerless and vifa look affordable. also thinking about using the money saved with DIY components to get an active crossover to play with.
anyone else planning a system? hopefully this thread will be of some use... aside from laughing at some fat kid

o boy....there are many many options. how much are you willing to spend and what kind of sound do you like?
for tweeters
-lpg 25nfa and 26na are great tweeters an cost about 75 for a pair.
-the vifa xt19 are good tweets as well
-seas lotus
-morel mt122 or 123 are great as well
best bang for the buck are prolly the lpgs. I had a set i recently sold for 60 shipped.
as for mids there are tons, look for:
seas
max fi
vifa
peerless
scan speak
tell me how much you are looking to spend and what kind of sound you like, and ill help ya out. going active is the way. =D

thanks tuan. here are my preliminary thoughts:
i listen to metal, rock, and blues. i'm leaning towards metal dome tweeters for clarity, and then i can attenuate them if i find then fatuiging. i want my sub to produce tight, punchy bass for kick pedals and bass guitar, so going lower than ~35 Hz is not a priority. i've been thinking that a ~2 ft^3 sealed box with 2 8" subs will give me the sound i'm looking for.
LP the sub @ 120 Hz, BP the mids @ 120 Hz - 3 kHz, HP the tweets @ 3 kHz?
~$600-$700 max price for tweets, mids, subs, amp, crossover (should i add a line driver to this??). it seems i can manage that with peerless (CSX?) drivers, but what else? which of these DIY drivers like to rock?

I may be fat but I'm slow
Here's what I'm considering adding to my TSX after I've had it for a few months:
-Xtant 403A 3 channel amp ($240, Sounddomain.com)
-Adire Audio Koda 6.1 components ($350, Adireaudio.com)
-Adire Audio Shiva 12" subwoofer ($125, Adireaudio.com)
After I add a line driver, sub box, wires, installation, etc, it will probably be around $800-850. Go with a cheaper set of components, and your goal is easily met.
Oh, and I also will add an XM commander and input for my iPod mini, and maybe an AudioControl EQ+linedriver instead of the standard little Phoenix Gold LD. Yikes, that's a lot of shit in my car

hmmm
i would get
lpg 26na - 75 shipped
Max Fi 6.5 - 200 shipped
DLS- If you want a simple 5 channel amp to power your whole system give the DLS-CA50 a try. Nice amp. Does 4x50 + 170. Its underrated by 20-25%. its about 300 shipped.
Sub-
1. Creative sx10 - 200 shipped
2. Adire Shiva 12 - 125
3. RE 8 - 49 each.
If you really want to get some 8s give the REs a try. Personally I would get a single 10 or 12. I like the creative sx10, its actually made by Adire Audio just like the Shiva, but has the xbl^2 motor. Both the sx10 and shiva are very efficient.
As for the amp, Im not sure if you want to run a single amp or not. But the DLS Ca50 is a soild amp with a built in crossover. If you need more help let me know.
You'll have a VERY VERY nice system. How it sounds depends on your install. Maybe you want to spend some money on some sound deadner. I think its a must.
