Burned cds won't work...Lets solve this
I have a '01 and of course cannot get CDRs to play in the stock head unit, I've had the head unit replaced at the dealer and still nada. I have seen a lot of posts about people who can and can't get them to play. Please post the following information I'm sure many people will benifit from it.
1) Which Media?
2) What software?
3) What brand Burner?
4) What speed is the meida rated for?
5) At what speed did you burn the disk?
6) More, less than 74 mins of music?
7) What year is your TL?
8) Sucess rate with your combonation.
9) Do you really, really, really love your TL.
Can a mod STICKY this for a couple of days so we might be able to get a heap of info on this(this is the ONLY thing about my TL I don't love)

I have an '03 and have tried multiple brands burned on both my old Acer CD writer 8x, and friends' cd's that they've burned. All work with no hesitation to play.

1) Memorex
2) Nero
3) cheapo- don't remember
4) 16

6) more/less, been up to 78min

I think this has been discussed before either here or someplace else. I think the conclusion was for the best success rate was to use name brand cd's and use only the silver backed ones. Colored cd's seem to have the most trouble. The cheap cd's have been found to have stamping problems creating incomplete tracks and off-centered tracks creating tracking errors. IMO

in my own personal experience, it was not the brand of CD (cheap or expensive), but it's the software you're burning...also, it helps if you burn it at a lower speed.

I don't think it has anything to do with any of that stuff. It is just our CD players are not 100% compatible with CDR's. I have used all kinds of CDR brands and burners, speeds etc. It seems to play when it wants to. So far, I have been using Fujifilm at 48X and I have had no problems at all. Plays just like in my PC. You can skip forward and backward without any problems. But if I try to play that same CD in my friends 00TL, it sucks. It works fine in mine, but sucks in her 00tl. She has a few CD's that play fine in her car, but suck in mine. Honestly guys, I hate to say it, but our headunits just suck, and everyone's car will be able to read a different kind of media....Trust me, I don't think anything (media, burn speed..etc) will be universal. If you noticed, everyone here has their own method and I have tried some of your methods and some work and others do not. You just have to find what brand will play in your car and stick to it. Sorry this is so long, but my roomates and I have been trying to find a universal fix for our Tl's for two years now..no success.....I love my car, but hate my headunit. It would be be cheaper to buy the Apline CD changer off of Ebay ( $50) than to keep buying all types of media and different burners to test them out.
Just my $.02,,,,but hey, if anyone ever figures out a universal idea, please let me know
thanks

1) Memorex, Khypermedia, Prime Peripherals (All very cheap)
2) Nero
3) Lite-on
4) 16x - 32x
5) Some burned at 32x some even burned at 48x
6) Typically less than 74 min.
7) 2003 TLS
8) 100% (so far)
9) So far so good
Honestly, the first culprit I'd suspect is the HU. If you burn a disc that will play in your computer, your portable CD player, your home theater CD player, and every other CD player you try BUT it won't play in your HU....it's the HU.
I use the cheapest media available and burn it at the max speed of my burner using Nero. The only time I've ever had a problem was with a cheap ass portable CD player I used for the gym that would "decide" which CDRs it would play. I sh!tcanned it and got a Panasonic. Problem solved.
I know that doesn't really help much. I'm more curious about the year of the car and the model for this issue. Do the TL and the TLS come with the same HU?
Brewboy has a 2000 that will play CDRs. I believe he owns a TLS while you state you have a 2001 TL.
Maybe I'm just fishing here but I think it's worth a look.

how's this for quirky...i can play my burned cdrs in my computer at home, laptop, but some wont play in my computer at work(which is newer than my personal computer) also, my dvd player at home wont play ANY cdrs but my cdchanger which is 5 yrs older than the dvd has played all my cdrs. as for the car, it has done the same...it has been flawless playing ALL cdrs that i have burned, no matter what media type or sw or speed ive burned at!

I asume you are using the stock Bose headunit. I have had no problem in my 99 (i don't know if they did something to HU in subsequent years though) using burned cds. I use Memorex, TDK, and Sony and i haven't had an issue even with a delay in reading them. I think it is all in the software you use though. It controls the style of burning and there for can determine where the product will work. When i get back to school I'll let ya'll know what software it is i am using (I know it is Roxio, but i have no idea what edition or with what settings)

Its defaintely something with the Bose headunits because about a year ago I had the radio swapped out by the dealer under warranty because it wouldn't play burned cd's. If I had a burnt cd and put it in my car it would take a couple of minutes to read and start playing ONE track....when I brought it to the dealer they said there was nothing they can do.....I then proceeded to put the same cd in a floor model (same year at the time) and it played with no problem. That was the only reason they replaced mine under warranty.
I definately believe its something with Bose because I have experienced the same thing with the temperature as well once in a while. :banghead:

Ok I think I got it.
Here we go. I tried a couple of friends burners and I think I got it.
It's all in the Burner My buddy's HP worked in my TL any blank Media and either nero or Roxio EZ CD creator. My Teac nada to matter what combonatin!
I bought a new laptop(M-a-s-h-i-t-a) Burner works great any combo of Hardware or software.
If you can burn CD's for your TL PLEASE post the type of burner you are using, as precise as posible (HP 320i).
And if you can't burn with you current burner please post also AND then find a Friend/Neighbor/Relative who has positive working Burner and test it. I know this is it, we just need some volume tests to make sure this works.
PLEASE POST.

I Believe you are on to something.
I notice that I had a "Smart & Freindly" CD burner that I
used to burn a CD-R which works with a non-colored
el-cheapo disk fairly well. However I upgraded to a
Sony DVD/CD burner and nothing burned from it works on
any media I tried.
I am going to re-install the S&F drive in a second PC
and try a CD on each with the same media.
I agree with you all. This is absolutely unacceptable
that these units have so much trouble playing CD-R's.
I bought a $125 Sony CD player for an older vehicle and
it plays anything. I'm not impressed with Bose equipment
anyway. Overhyped and overpriced.
Stay tuned,
/Steve

I decided it wasn't worth all of this and to take the plunge and buy a new HUD main unit for the car. After all, you see them advertised at Best Buy for $100, right? Well then I got some more bad news. Bose systems aren't compatible with anything else! They said that if I want to buy another main unit I'll need to either replace all of the speakers or cut out the amplifier in my TL. So much for a quick fix. Circuit City told me the same thing. Does anyone else know something about this?
