Best Subwoofers for Sound Quality
I have been away from car audio for awhile. and I am looking for one 12" or 15" sub.
A few years ago it seemed that JL or Image Dynamics had the best subs out there.
Anyone have any suggestions for a good high end sub?

as far as 'mainsteam' companies, I'd said ID is still the way to go. I think in a lot of circles the old IDW is still considered the best SQ sub of all time, but the IDQ and IDmax are still very common in SQ set ups.
it still always depends on your taste though. Like the DIYMA subs that were produced in small quantity are a pure sq sub, that are almost completely transparent, but I don't think that satisfies some people.
Other subs like the Critical Mass, altomobile falstaff, and Phase Linear Aliante's are probably out of a lot of people's budgets. Even the Aurasound NS15 and NS18 are EXTREMELY good subs, but cost a lot of money
There are also the Seas Lotus SW300 and SW250 which I've heard are very nice. Maybe the Arc Audio Flatlines..., or morel ultimos
I don't think there are a whole lot of new brands going for pure SQ. It seems like most of the newer 'internet' brands that you might not be familiar with are mostly SPL. Although there are a few SQL subs in there like the Fi Q, and maybe the Soundsplinter RL-p's.
also there are subs that might be geared towards home audio, but would do great in an SQ set up like the peerless XXLS's, and the Dayton HF's.
but again, it depend on:
1. how much power you have
2. what kind of sound you want
3. how much money you have

^^ sounds like a nice setup. i like the id subs alot.
at this stage in the game, if youve been away for awhile especially, there is more companies with quality products now. almost every answer on this page is excellent for SQ. except maybe the alpine type x, the only 2 ive heard were on decent amps and i didnt like the sound.
but like osamu said if you really want some good help answer these 3 simple questions:
1. how much power do you have
2. what kind of sound you want
3. how much money do you have

^^he asked about SQ not SPL although those subs dont sound "bad" by any means they were pretty much designed for SPL with a little SQ for those peole who listen to their system daily. id still go after the XXX's which supposedly sound like the jl 13's only a lot louder

the RE Audio XXX is a monstrous woofer... its mainly a competition spl sub.... it was made for massive amounts of excursion (3"-3.5")
its most likely my favorite sub but man is it expensive....brother paid $650 for one and that was on a hookup when they go for at least $1000.
the thing stood to my knee...it was gamungous

yeah they do bump hard but quality is deff a big part of it as well. i preferr alpine the most tho, i have two alpine type r 10" with an alpine m1000 amp and they sound simply amazing. i would get the type x's but i dun got that kinda cash, plus they didnt have it at bestbuy for my discount lol

Although the above mentioned brands are excellent, it's still all a matter of personal opinion. You should definitely get out to some audio shops and listen to some different subs in different kinds of enclosures if you aren't sure what you want. EVERYONE hears something different. What I think may sound good and what you think sounds good could be two completely different things.
On top of that, you have to remember this.....the enclosure that the sub is in make ALL the difference in the world. A poorly designed enclosure will make even the best of subs sound horrible.

i have a lot of experience with different subs and i would recomend a kicker l7 or solox. now if youre really going for sound quality, you shouldnt be looking at 12s or 15s. a 10" sub will be most accurate and give you a lot sharper base

Carbon-fiber laminated cone among other things... these blew me away. They're freaking expensive though, and very hard to find

I have 2 Zapco 10'' subs that sound awesome, great SQ however, I have heard much less expensive subs that sound great too: image dynamics, treo, id's, etc... For great SQ clean power, good processing, and a lot of tuning will go a long way towards creating natural/clean sound
