Best Multimedia Head Unit? (No Navi)

I'm not looking for Navi, I just want something that does a good job of playing DVDs, mp3 discs, has a TV tuner available, and is ipod ready.

I've glanced at the Kenwood KVT-717DVD. It has everything I want. Does anything else do it better for a similar price?

I saw a Panasonic with all of the features you're talking about along with an integrated TV tuner. Not sure how good of car stereo brand Panasonic is though.

When you say Ipod ready, you want it to be able to control the Ipod while you have it concealed somewhere?

it could go either way, the head unit, or I can control it.

I'm not sure if the new Eclipse's have a TV tuner. But they did just come out with an iPod adapter.

Pretty much all of the aftermarket HU manufacturers have AUX inputs nowadays. So as long as your not looking for something that will control the Ipod too, then you can go with any of the major brands.

I think Kenwood is a good brand. They offer the MusicKeg which is pretty tight.

Take a look at the Pioneer decks too. There was a 7500DVD that I saw selling in the black market section. I think some of the higher end ones an integrated Tv tuner. I have a Pioneer TV tuner and my reception works great in my area.

Eclipse is also really good like others have suggested. If you want good sound, some of their decks have 8v rca outputs.

Alpine > *

Alpine IVA-D310 is a great unit. I love it.
Although it has no TV Tuner, no TV Tuner has all that great of reception anyway.

It depends on where you live. I get great reception in my area, especially when I'm on the freeway. I'm close to some of the broadcast antennas though.

I agree I think Alpine is one of the best. They are probably the most pricey though. If you don't mind dishing out the extra cash, then definitely look at the Alpine stuff.

The AVH-P7500DVD 7" has been unfortunately discontinued. It was the only unit that I was aware of at the time included 5.1 dolby digital and dts with built in tv tuner. That unit retailed for $3600 cdn. It was the only one in the market at the time that supported DVD-Audio.

This year they have presented the AVH-P7600DVD which they took out the tv tuner to cut back on costs, and felt that not a lot of people wanted it, therefore dropping the cost of the unit. This unit now retails for $2799 the additional tv tuner retails for about $400.
Still a great unit, does DVD-Audio, 5.1 dolby digital and dts, 7" motorized flip out touchscreen.

yeah, I saw the 7500, and the 7600, they look really nice.

I've found the 7600 for fairly cheap from a decent online retailer for about 900 US.

I think I may take the plunge, even though I swore off dumping more money into the car.

Decisions decisions.

hey worse case scenario you pull it back out and put it in ur next car, i mean its way ahead of the game with the 7500 or 7600 it does DVD-Audio with 5.1 Dolby Digital DTS

No other unit I can think of has all that right now and the 7600 is fairly cheap for the amount that it does. With its own built in amplified centre channel output.
That means you don't HAVE to buy an amp for just the centre channel but recommended.

Kenwood KVT-915DVD or XXV-05V. Hands down.

TV tuner built in. Built in 5.1 DD and DTS decoder, 50x5 internal, 5.1 preamp, DVD, and DVD-A capeble. FWIW, the only other unit on the market now that plays DVD-As in DVD-A format is the $6000 Alpine F#1 combo. Sat radio/ipod/changer/HD radio ready. 6 ch 24 bit D/A with 96kHz resolution by Texas Instruments. 7" widescreen touch panel. 2 A/V inputs (one assignable to b/u camera) and a dedicated nav input.

If you want a multimedia unit that will do it all, that is it.

edit: just looked at the Pioneer...ignore the comment about the only one playing DVD-A.

^^ Nice man. That's what I got too

I got some of the other addons like the TV tuner, Ipod Interface, and Sirius. Let me know if you ever want some info on that stuff.

You should read this thread about doing the bypass. Ignore the diagrams on the top and go to the posts by StreetEffectz.

thanks TSX. I've read reviews about the ipod interface being crap. Most say its easier to just use the ipod directly if you've got a lot of songs. the pioneer interface is slow and hard to navigate through.

^^ Yep it's pretty crappy. If you make good playlists it's decent, but I wouldn't say it's great or anything. I got mine on Ebay for like $60 so it was cheap. The only pros of it is I don't ever have to charge my Ipod or take it out.

Hey that link you showed said the reserve was not met. Did you end up getting the N2?
