Question Best 12" Subs? Max Sub Power?

Hello,

I have a 03 TLS. In the trunk I have 2 MTX 12" in sealed box powered by an MTX Thunder 4250D amp (300w... I think). Everything else (audio) is stock. Are there better 12" subs out there? (I know this is subjective) I listen to a fair amount of DnB and hip-hop so I need subs that can hit the lowest frequencies possible.

Also, what do ya'll think is the most power I can feed the subs w/o overpowering the stock audio components?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

You can get better sound from JL, from Elemental, from Adire, from DLS, from many other companies.

But as far as how far you can go without outpacing the OEM system - IMO, you're there already.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Assuming I keep the same amp, what do you think about the Image Dynamics ID12 D4 v3 12 inch subwoofer?

Thanks again,

Joe

In my opinion, JL audio makes the best 12's, hands down.

yep....

JL Audio does make the best 12 inch subs...i had a pair of w6v2 12" subs and they knocked everything in my car...honestly get 1 JL audio w6v2 12" and a 500 watt ( Rockford, JL ) amp and you'll be set.

I promise I'm not retarded... but is JL the same as JBL? I'm just not finding many (any...) places that carry JL but do JBL.

Now stop laughing...

JL is not the same as JBL. And we are not laughing.......hard.

If you are looking at Image, consider the IDMAX as well. The JL W7 or W6V2, the Diamond TDX, Adire Brahma. Just to name a few.

Damn... if prices are anything to go by, you ain't kidding. ~$50+ for JBL ~150+ for JL. Biiiiiiiiiiiig difference.

So I just checked the actual stats on my MTX amp, it's only 125 watts at 4 ohms. It seems like all the JL's I've seen are 4 ohm. Is 125 watts going to be enough to power 2 12"s?

Thanks,

Joe

JL is very proud of their product and price it accordingly. I thought...hey I am just going to get a JL12W6....then when I saw that they cost $499 each I was like....uh...I will just stick with an alpine 12 since the color matches my car and the price matches my budget!

Sorry to quote myself, but just to be clear the MTX puts out 250 @ 2 ohms and 125 at 4 ohms.

Someday I WILL learn what the hell the difference is...

I know Infinity make a very good sounding 12" sub called the Perfect 12 - very efficient power-wise; I think the sensitity is 96db/1 watt. Crutchfield carries that one and the DVC one for $180 each.

The amp you have will put 200w into 4 ohms and 350w into 2 ohms. With the 96db sensitivity and 350w, it should crank out about 120db of clean sound - as long as your head unit is up to it.

They're having a sale at www.onlinecarstereo.com, the 12w6 is going for 340.

Ok... so considering all the info I've getten (thanks all ), and my budget for this, here is a list of what I'm looking at in no particular order:

Alpine SWE-1242
Alpine Type S - SWS 1222D
Blaupnekt STSw 1200

My PRIMARY concern is getting better quality lows and bunch then from my MTX 6000 subs.

I REALLY want the JL12W6 but I don't have the cash. Any help in ranking these 3, personal reviews, etc would be reatly appreciated

Thanks for all the replies I really appreciate it!

Joe

from what i hear the new alpine type r's pictured above sound really good. they hit hard and low. the price is good to. but you might want to upgrade your amp. you should check out caraudio.com do a search for the subs you listed and see what you can muster up.

What do you think of this?

I found a guy selling this setup:

2 JL 12w3V2 subwoofers in a Jl Prowedge encloser. These subs were used for approximatley 5 months and a rockford 500w amp for $400. Sounds like an amazing deal.

Anyy thoughts?

Thanks,

Joe

Yeah they are the Dual Voice Coil 2+2 Ohm subs. They are loud as hell and they can go really low. But you would need 1000watts to run those babies!!!

Here's another area where I'm retarded. So I need a 1000w amp. Are there any other amp specs to look for? I'm just looking for a 1000w mono amp right?

Thanks again guys

Yes a 1000watt mono block amp would be perfect to feed those hungry subs. Just make sure you buy a high quality amp such as Alpine/JL Audio/Rockford Fosgate/Soundstream..etc.

Some people say that I wouldn't piss on Soundstream's HQ if it was on fire.

That's not true.

Wouldn't have to be on fire...

you should concentrate more on building a good box. as for sub, i'd rather buy eD, RE, or image dynamics over JL anyday. and whoever said solobaric subs are any good really don't know what they're talking about. only thing they have going for them is SPL, which is worthless if you're looking for quality.

why isn't anyone mentioning Eclipse Titanium subs, they are the most durable subs I have ever owned. I bought 1 10" for my wifes corolla powered by a 300W RMS kenwood monoblock amp and that little thing pounds!!!!! you can step on the sub face and put all of your weight on it with one foot(I weigh 190lbs) and it won't brake. I have done this as I was told it would hold up and sure enough it did. every Eclipse speaker period I have every bought rocked hard and never failed. Eclipse= best value and most underrated product on the market for car audio IMO.

using a single 10" Alpine Type R (older 2ohm DVC rated at 300wrms) in 0.6cu/ft sealed enclosure and it pounds quite hard. I was surprised at how low a 10" can go. And it keeps up with fast beats very well. That I consider a quality sub. I am feeding it 400wrms off of an alpine d-class monoblock at 4ohm.

Oh and I got it brand new off ebay for $100US shipping in.

OK...With love for all you noobs ou there with shatty systems...Brosef you need to get JL. They have the best sub and amp combo. Yes, they aree alittle more expensive then the rest but for a good reason. They are better then the rest. Believe me, go for the 10w7 with a 500-1 and you will have all the bass you need. Sealed or ported box, doesn't matter.. it will own the competition. The w6v2 is a little bit louded than the w7 but the w7 hits more clear.
