AVIC-Z2 in 07 TSX
Hey guys,
I looking at buying a new TSX but I wanted to change the stock radio unit out and put in a pioneer AVIC-Z2 nav system.
1. Do you know if it's possible to do this and still maintain all steering wheel controls?
2.From what i've read, the stock head unit is not double din but a weird size?
3.I see a lot of people have installed nav systems in their 2 storage compartments .... does anyone have or know of anyone that has a double din navigation installed in the radio slot?
I assume I would have to mount a sirius antenna and a gps antenna somewhere... oh its going to be fun
The main reason would be I can get this Z2 cheap from a friend and it has sirius!
Thanks in advance
Dan

Just my opinion... but satellite radio is lo-fi sound. Although the content is great, the quality is poor. Its the equivalent of 32 to 64 kbs mp3's.
Check out http://www.xmsiriusmonopoly.org/meintel_study.pdf for generic bit rate details.
I'd prefer to add an ipod. add a connection to the stock AUX input and feed whatever you want to it. Ipod, laptop, gaming console... something with better sound quality
If its nav you want, you could buy a new tsx with nav. if hi-fi sound is required, maybe add amp and speakers.
... maybe less

I know that the sirius is lower quality but their programming is unique and this is why i enjoy it.
I hope somebody else has a few tips/suggestions on doing this conversion! I would appreciate it greatly!

Here's my suggestion: don't.
The TSX radio (for the non-navi TSX) is 1 single integrated unit with the HVAC controls. This unfortunately puts it in the minority of cars for which you simply cannot remove the oem radio. Your only viable option is to add the Z2 as an additional head unit, and the easiest place to do that is down where the storage pockets are.
2 people have had a Z1 added to the TSX in the 'stock' location, and both did it with the use of an extensively customized second radio unit, where the screen alone is removed from the Z1 (or Z2) and fiberglassed into a unique radio front, while leaving the oem components behind it. Then, a custom ribbon cable is used to connect the screen to the brain, which is hidden somewhere else in the car.

Took him a year and a half and several thousand dollars. If you're into it, then by all means go for it, but that's a little much for me. That's why I got the OEM navi. If I were you, i'd just do the same too.

I appreciate your honest answer reach... I am assuming this may be a little more than I want to bite off...
I could always just wait for the coveted xm to sirius converter..... but I may be old and grey before it ever comes out....

LOL, OEM navi costs 2000. so my custom unit only cost me about 1000 more than what the OEM would have cost. It was not that expensive. Considering the z1 came with HDD, Bluetooth, advanced Voice activation, DVD player etc, etc, etc, etc

As much as i like the OEM navi, after playing around with it on my friends TSX, I got bored with it REAL quick.
For a 1000 more than the OEM navi, I'm pretty satisfied with my Z1. It amazes me everyday on how useful it is.
Reach, you are making it sound like this cost me like 7000 dollars
It only cost me about 3000 for everything. Since OEM navi is 2000, its not too far off the price and value of it.
Plus I took my time researching this project because I waited for the AVIC Z1 to hit the market first and let it be street tested. Thats why it took long.
the actual unit making only took a couple of months. not too shabby.

Hey man I'm not hating, I just think its a huge ordeal! You've definitly got the uniqueness tho. I know I had seen the 1 other unit before, wasn't sure if it was a Z1 or D1, but the point was the same, to put a 2-DIN screen in the stock location.
