altornator

does anyone bought a high amp altornator for there car after they got a high powered audio system installed. can anyone recommend a good upgraded altornator.. any help would be great..

Well, back on topic...I think there is a company called Ohio Generator or something like that, which specializes in high output alternators. I know a few people from various boards have upgraged to their alternators.

Has anyone tried the "Alterstart" alternators? I heard bad and good comments about them, but I'm not sure what to believe. They do offer a warranty on them.......any thoughts?

yea, i think ohio gen are highly rated http://www.ohiogen.com/

i forget some other ones......
how much power are you planning on running?

i'd do the big 3 upgrade first
i think you could also rewind your stock alternator, i don't know much about that though.

yeah i agree w/ Osamu, if u do the Big 3 Upgrade, and then maybe a new battery you should be alright. Also, i'm not sure, but i think Stinger makes a High Output Alternator as well.

The Ohio Generators are really nice. I have had very good luck with them. Great customer service too. They even had a 250A for an 01 Mercedes S500 I called about the other day...didn't expect that one!

well i get a friend that works at tweeter and he was the one that suggested for me to get one. right now im pretty much getting all my system components together before i install them all..

what exactly is the big 3 upgrade?

well what i have right now from my system is

jl audio 12w7
jl audio 1000/1
jl audio 450/4
SVR battery 34/78DT

so i already have an upgraded yellow top battery is a new alternator really needed??

Depends on how aggressive you plan to play your system, I run 1200 watt mono for my subs, and I'm putting a 600 watt highs amp in and I plan to upgrade my alternator when i put the highs amp on just to be safe. I have a yellow top as well.

I don't really think a new alternator is needed....
i'm running a memphis 1000d, and st-300, so overall rated power of 1300W, with nothing besides a blue-top. I haven't even done the big 3, i was going to, but i barely even notice if my lights dim, so I didn't even feel that it was necessary.

But i don't play my music that aggesively, and some amps are more efficient than others, so if it'll put you at ease, i guess you could.

In the long run, you can have problems with that much current draw on a stock system. What will happen is your alternator will no longer be able to keep up with the demand of the car and the system. When the alternator cannot produce this current, it will be pulled directly from the battery so the battery will no longer be charging while you are driving. At that point, you will have a bad alternator and be going through batteries left and right. Not to mention the fact that you can fry the amps by having too little voltage/current going to them. All in all, protect your system, your car, and buy an alternator.

Upgrade ur cable, get a cap and run it till it killz ur alternator then upgrade it . Honestly ur good as is, its not like u have a 89 teg ur stock alternator should be fine for years to come.
