'99 TL Navi Upgrade to DVD
Hi- I have seen several threads where people have upgraded to a DVD from the old HDD navi system. Ideally, I would like to do the upgrade without replacing the screen and the antenna. Is this possible? If yes, where can I buy the upgrade?
If the upgrade is not possible without the swap of a whole system, is it possible to buy another hard disk so that I can keep two regions in the car and swap out the hard disk when I go to the second region?
Any thoughts, experiences, cost of having it done, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks. -Raj

I believe there are 2 99 owner have done this, myself and blackshadow. No you don't have to replace the screen or anything else but the DVD Navi Unit. These unit can be get from the recycling yard. Cost about $1000 for the unit and take about 30 mins to install it yourself. Pretty much take out the old one and put in the new unit and replug in the harnesses.
Yea you can get the extra HDD unit and have the dealer put in the 2nd region. But I think the 2 year free upgrade already over for all of us 99 owner. But is it worth it?

Iomega sells a 340 Mb Microdrive(t.m.) direct from their website, www.iomega.com. I paid $179, no tax, no shipping, for one. I have tested, and this drive works in the '99 Acura/Alpine Navi unit. While the factory supplied hard drive is 500 Mb, I suspect (don't know for sure) that most of the map regions will fit nicely in the 340 Mb. My 2001 South Central region data base consumes only 199Mb. Both the orginal and the Iomega hard drives can be read and written in a PCMCIA type II slot, found in most notebooks. Hope this helps.

I am trying to:
(1) Avoid having to go to an Acura dealer each time I want the Navi region changed.
(2) Have a spare region with me so that if I want to drive from Oklahoma to Kansas, I don't have to do (1), and also don't have to carry a laptop with me to reload a single hard drive once I cross the region boundry.
