It is the impedance (resistance) of the voice coil(s). I am a little out of the loop when it comes to JL products but I believe the W3 is a dual 6ohm sub please feel free to correct me. You basically have to wire it in a way so that your amp can be run at maximum efficiency.

Take a look on the JL website. It has been a while, but they used to have a somewhat decent tutorial on there (for sub wiring anyway)...

It is more than likely a dual 6ohm, for a total load of 3 ohm. this sub have a very good response in a sealed 0.9 cuft enclosure, very near from the newer W3v2. It will handle 250w rms for sure, 300 if you use 0.8cuft or smaller box. find and amp that procude that kind of power at 3 ohm ( like an amp that produce 400w at 2 ohm and 200 at 4 ohm) and it will be a pretty decent bass setup
