Hey guys... last week I finally got my Navi hard drive replaced by Acura ($1100!!!) after about a YEAR of waiting. Just today I found out about a way of avoiding the cost and doing it for about a third of the price.

Is it possible to replace a 99 TL harddrive navi unit with a dvd unit from a 2001 RL?

 

from everything i've heard, that's impossible... if you have problems with your existing one and want something an alternative the the $1100 acura one, lemme know...

I was constantly getting hard drive errors when I parked my car outside (not when in my garage). I replaced the hard drive with one bought on EBay, but it didn't help. I eventually took the unit out of the trunk, opened it up, and looked a the connectors on the main circuit board - there were 'cold solder joints'. Despite their name, cold solder joints cause problems when they get warm because they expand and lose electrical contact. I got out my soldering iron (very fine tip) and reflowed the solder around the connectors(heated until it melted, adding a bit of new solder where necessary) , put the system back together and had no more problems.

You can't always see cold solder joints, even if you know what to look for. They usually occur around connectors because of the way the boards are made.

 

Yes, you absolutely can. Plenty of people have done it on the board. Plug and play. Check ebay for used dvd units.
