That's like saying if you're riding in a train and you jump up into the air, you'll go flying backwards.

As a dedicated mythbusters fan who loves your show, I’m here to tell you that your airplane on the conveyor belt is busted. Here’s why: To get an airplane to fly depends on aerodynamic forces produced by airflow over the wing. If there is no airflow, there will be no lift produced and the airplane will not get airborne. If there is no wind then the plane must move relative to the surface of the earth in order to produce airflow over the wing and thereby lift. This is the propeller’s job, to get the airplane moving relative to the surface of the earth. In your experiment the plane was moving relative to the surface of the earth and thus producing airflow over the wing and enough lift to get it airborne. If the experiment had been true, with the belt and the plane “moving” at the same speed, then the plane would not move relative to the earth and no airflow would be produced over the wing.
The problem was that your belt was not fully supporting the airplane. The weight of the plane was transferred through the belt to the earth’s surface. This achieved sufficient friction with the earth to allow the airplane to accelerate relative to the belt and the earth. Your dedicated viewer,

Yeah, this piece of wasted population is missing the point. The conveyor belt only spins wheels. The wheels can spin independently of which way the airplane is moving.
Fucking idiot. Must have received his coveted "MS" at a state school.

This topic is my basis for the PRO EUGENICS movement. Alberta sure as shit had something right
Canada
In Canada, the eugenics movement took place early in the 20th century, particularly in Alberta, and was quite popular. The Sexual Sterilization Act of Alberta was enacted in 1928, focusing the movement on the sterilization of mentally deficient individuals, as determined by the Alberta Eugenics Board. The campaign to enforce this action was backed by groups such as the United Farm Women's Group, including key member Emily Murphy.
Individuals were assessed using IQ tests like the Stanford-Binet. This posed a problem to new immigrants arriving in Canada, as many had not mastered the English language, and often their scores denoted them as having impaired intellectual functioning. As a result, many of those sterilized under the Sexual Sterilization Act were immigrants who were unfairly categorized.
The popularity of the eugenics movement peaked during the depression. Individuals sought an explanation for the financial problems of the nation, and the notion of defective breeding became a scapegoat; citizens blamed individuals considered to be subhuman. The end of the Canadian eugenics movement was brought about when the Sexual Sterilization Act was repealed in 1972.

Teach The Controversy!!!
That episode of Mythbusters was a part of the national conspiracy to keep the TRUTH from the students in U.S. schools! I want stickers put on EVERY physics textbook that says; "A plane can take off on a conveyor belt is JUST A THEORY and not proven fact."
I want all physics classes all the way through college to teach both sides. Students should know that there is a controversy and that there are other theories that say the plane will NOT take off. Those that claim that the plane will take off are denying the glory of the God of the Wicker People and are faithless heathens that walk in darkness!

Anyone with half a brain can figure this out.....
I cant believe they wasted their time, but hey...it was great to watch.
There are some video's on youtube that explain this better, using treadmills....if your bored.

This is a largely manufactured issue - the reason myself and others said it wouldn't take off was a misinterpretation (misreading) of the question. It had nothing to do with where the propulsion came from, that part was not the source of our reasoning. Continue kicking.

Most pussy way evar of saying "I'm a brain-dead idiot."

^I agree. When I first thought of it, I thought that the treadmill was instantly matching the wheel speed. In that case the plane couldn't even move forward (regardless of propulsion, because wheel speed couldn't be matched while plane was going in the other direction, mathematical impossibility), in which case it obviously would not take off.

If you word the question differently, and say the threadmill "Matches the wheels speed" instead of "matches the planes speed" then the plane DOES NOT take off...
What would happen, is the wheels would be spinning so damn fast, the bearings would explode... lol

Assuming Y>0 and X>0, X Cannot = X+Y
However, since the treadmill matches the AIR SPEED, the wheels will just spin twice as fast.
