Well, as you see the debating as pretty much stopped, because as throroughly as it was explained, there's NO WAY people can really still argue that it "wont" take off... and that's obviously what's happened... lol

I can't believe the Mythbusters are really testing this, it's so obvious, they're just going to be showing everyone what they know is going to happen.
At least we can tell people who think it won't take off that on Mythbusters it actually did.

TOMORROW IS THE BIG DAY!

Jan 30, 9:00 pm
(60 minutes)

MythBusters
Airplane on a Conveyor Belt
TV-PG

In this three-myth blockbuster the team takes a crash-course in remote controlled airplane flying, bug-out by testing the "cockroach survival" theory, then return to fraternity pranks with exploding cans of shaving cream.

anyone wanna take bets? i'm in for 100USD via paypal that the plane takes off. further, i'll bet that the mythbusters explanation to the problem states in some form that the treadmill is irrelevant to the problem.

i guess this forum has come to a consensus. but other forums i frequent the debate goes on intensely.

I am confident that the remote controlled plane takes off as evident in Adam's reaction in the video posted earlier.

The large scale "real plane"??

I don't know, me thinks that it sort of takes off but not fully and they come up with a reason why. This will then force them to re-visit the myth another time and keep the myth going and cause even more arguments...

nah the real plane takes off no problem. at least that's what the teaser video looks like. i would think, due to the nature of plane crashes, that either it does or doesnt. otherwise they could wreck the plane hahahha.

Another great question: if the plane was landing on a conveyor belt runway that was programed to move forward as fast at the wheels were rolling, would the plane be able to stop with its thrust reversers?

great question. absolutely it would stop with reverse thrusters.

how about if the plane were coming in for landing on the reverse treadmill. would the plane suddenly come to a dead stop if the treadmill were matching the plane's speed in reverse? or would it still glide in like norma landing...

Same principle....YES

The wheels will keep spinning, but the thrust going in reverse will hold the plane in place.

It is the same principle...but I'd bet my remaining testicle that the stopping scenario is more intuitive to most people.

I like the expression and demeanor from Jamie after the first test when it fell off the end of the treadmill. "And what did we think was going to happen".

I swear the guy who asked him the question was holding back "You fucking retard" when the pilot said that.

I would think he would know. I didn't know planes wheels free wheeled till this thread. Thought there was a little motor in there
