I live in Baltimore and there is a certain long stretch of road in the city where "legal" street racing occurs on Saturday nights. I say legal because the cops know about it and allow it to happen. They only go for it on Sat. and in a certain time frame. I guess they do it just to let them get it out of their systems...

Is this sort of thing allowed where you are?

yeah we got some weird laws. And I don't mean to be a pest, but I got some more questions

I passed a high speed chase tonight on the interstate and I was wondering if cops are allowed to use spike strips wherever they want? like does it change between a high traffic interstate and a rural road? And I heard cops aren't allowed to use the pit manuever anymore to stop people? WTF

and my other question, me and my brother got pulled over long ago for speeding about 25-30 over on our way to school. A detective pulled us over and bitched us out like none other but he didn't write us a ticket. Are detectives allowed to write tickets?

Thanks, and maybe these will be my last questions

pest?? this is an "ask anything" thread, ask away

Spike strip locations depend on a lot of factors, traffic, possible other people, how bad the suspect is, etc...

The Pit manuever has always been an agency by agency thing, many here can use it, some cannot...

yes, detectives can write tickets, a cop is a cop is a cop... in california once you're sworn in you're a cop 24/7, and you can write a ticket or arrest someone anywhere in the state... it's just a pain to do it out of area... but to answer your question, yeah they can but usually it's a pain in the ass, and they just pulled you over because you were speeding real bad and he wanted you to slow down...

cool, thanks.

about the spike strips, I first saw a cop on the shoulder getting something out of his trunk, then I passed the whole band of speeding cops (about 12 of 'em) so I figured the cop was gettin' the spikes out, but i guess not. he ended up going about 20 more miles is what i heard last.

and about the detective, i don't know if he was out of area or what but he was definitely pissed none the less. I was a passenger and he bitched at me for looking at him. I was in 8th grade and I thought I was going to jail

spike strips are sometimes the retractable kind, where the officer can keep the spikes down and harmless to traffic until the right moment...

if im in plainclothes for something and someone does something bad enough to make me pull them over, i yell my brains out at them...

bob's donut and pastry
1621 polk , sf

i've arrested a lot of gang bangers in all the different neighborhoods where I work, gangbangers make me laugh because they act so hard until they are singled out, then without their friends they are such pussies... "oww, you're hurting me" etc...

One time in the early morning, I passed a cop and knew I was getting pulled over because he hit his brakes to put the car in drive. Due to the fact that it required time to move from his position and get on the turnpike, it was night and the road didnt have any lightposts...If I had pulled to the side of the road and turned off my car...do you think he would have seen me ?

probably, once he saw that there were no lights in front of him his suspicion would go up and he'd be watching... it hinges on if he ID'd your car as it went by i guess...

whats the ratio of traffic cops on patrol real late at night (~3am) vs. during the day? Would the just be out and about making sure no crime is going on, or would they really setup speed traps?

Well there were other cars on the road...I think it was my HIDs that made him pull me over which concurs with the IDing of my vehicle.

some agencies are more active in "traps" at night because the pickings get slim...

personally, i have more calls at night so there are less units out to do traffic work, but in california was have the "Avoid The X" (where X=participating agencies) devoted to traffic only sometimes, usually around heavy DUI periods...

If you get in to a fight with an off duty cop, are you automatically going to get arrested for assaulting an officer?

no, assaulting an officer is when you assault a cop who is clearly identified...

Well he was in his unmarked car and all dressed up so I guess he was working when he was pulling us over.

Do you pull people over when your in plain clothes and not in your cop car? That seems like it would be hard to do unless you have a blue light with ya I would think your a crazy road rage guy trying to kill me if you started chasing me

Whats the rule as far as doing stupid stuff in your car but not in a public road? Like if I got busted doing donuts in a industrial shop parking lot, can I be given a ticket even though its public property?

I have always had good relations with law enforcement. Even though I have like 6 points right now I probably should have double that amount. All I can say is that if you arent a prick they usually will give you a break. I really gotta slow down tho, these tickets are getting pricey.

I've had numerous State/Local cops as pt's where I work (hospital setting), and all have been very decent human beings. Dont ever use a blanket statement like "all NY troopers are DICKS!!!111", because your ass will be calling them like a madman when/if something bad ever happens, and you bet your life you'll be happy they are out there.

I just got a ticket in Nassau County, NY for "imprudent speed". My town speed limit is 35, and I did a hard acceleration to about 45-50, then coasted immediately cuz I realized I was going too fast... There was no speed marked on the ticket. Any tips on how to deal with this ticket?

How come some cops just give warnings when people clearly break the law (i.e. traffic violations)? Aren't you obligated to enforce the law and give them tickets?

Besides setting up a speed traps, what are typical things cops do to serve the public when they're not being dispatched (not busy)??
