Pictures are uploaded with/embedded in posts (no linking to sources outside azine)
This is to address the issue of dead links to pictures found in posts. The suggestion is to handle pictures in a similar way to email attachments. This way, they are essentially part of the post, and don't rely on a user to keep hosting the picture.

NO! AZ isn't going to spend the money it'd take in hard drive storage and bandwidth to start storing all these pics on their servers nor should they. then you have legal issues of potentially hosting a copyrighted material. Not worth it for that little benefit

I dunno how nobody complained about this.
Attachments have apparently never worked here, but they are now fixed, and working.

Yep, mine has always said "you may not post attachments" 
To the OP:
It seems that if someone is posting pictures for a DIY thread for example and wants them to be permanently stored on AZ, they could host them in an AZ album. If someone is posting a pic of their kids temporarily, they can host on photobucket or whatever and have the option to remove it whenever they feel like it.
I think this system has worked fine so far

Unlocked for mods but not members maybe?
The one astro posted is slick, though. Just click on it or hover over it for a few seconds and you get a big version without going to an external site. It doesn't show up if you quote him, either...very nice...nothing worse than people quoting pictures.
