Extends for one too many spaces. It underlines the space after the word you are trying to underline as well as the word.

OK, in fact what appears to be happening is that when I double click on a word to then underline it, the selection of the word includes the space after the word. If i sweep just the letters of the word and then underline, it works properly.

Problem fixed.
