Find yourself a factory service manual and follow the troubleshooting steps. It could be a simple as a loose connector or a fuse or relay failure. Trying to recharge it with the compressor not running could cause additional problems. If it was a refrigerant problem that a recharge would fix, it would slowly get worse due to a slow leak. If it simply stops working, the cause is likely a severe system breach like a broken or damaged coolant line, a failed compressor, or an electrical or sensor problem.
