Japanese makers taking market share
Edmunds.com: Despite "Employee price" incentives, U.S. automakers are losing market share at home.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Continuing to treat everyone like family hasn't helped domestic U.S. automakers hold off market share gains by Japanese rivals, according to data from automotive Website Edmunds.com.
Toyota, Honda and Nissan have increased their U.S. market share so far this month, in some cases to record levels, according to Edmunds.com, despite "Employee price" incentives being extended through August by the traditional "Big 3" automakers.
Toyota's U.S. market share exceeded 15 percent for the first two weeks of August, according to Edmunds.com. Toyota's highest monthly market share so far was in April of this year when it sold 14 percent of all vehicles sold in the U.S. Toyota's market share includes the Toyota, Scion and Lexus brands.
Honda's market share, so far this month, was 9.5 percent, an increase over the company's eight percent market share last month. Honda's previous high monthly market share, including both the Honda and Acura brands, was 9.1 percent in August.
Nissan also increased its market share from 6 percent in July to 6.5 percent so far in August, Edmunds.com said. The Nissan and Infiniti brands achieved their highest monthly market share to date in January of this year, with 7.2 percent of the market.
General Motors' market share has slipped below 25 percent in contrast to the 29 percent market share the company enjoyed in August, according to Edmunds.com.
Ford Motor Co., meanwhile, has suffered a slight decline in market share this month, slipping from 20 percent in July to 19 percent so far this month.
Chrysler's market share, at about 13 percent, has stayed the same.
"GM's success earlier this summer has really taken its toll on inventory levels for several models, limiting their ability to have another terrific month," said Jesse Toprak, Edmunds.com Senior Analyst. "And there appears to be relatively little momentum left in GM's employee discount incentive program now that it is in its third month."
