shifting problem

well, i drive an ilx dynamic manual and it's a pleasure to drive, not to mention low fuel consumption (6.2l/100kms) on freeway... but have noticed a whining sound when shifting to the 1st gear, lasting only for a second or two, perhaps when turning or on an uphill...as it happens only when changing gears i'm guessing... what could it be, clutch, synchro...and it happens rarely, perhaps once or twice a day...

I had the same problem.... You are correct that it has to do with the clutch and flywheel - This is a known issue which believe it or not is covered by the warranty. Bring your vehicle in ASAP.

I'm sorry I never noticed your post sooner. Anyone who has a manual should read this post and check if they have the same issue. It sounds like a squeal or whine just after you disengage the clutch in 1st gear. I had this fixed March this year and the sound is gone, phew!

Love the manual shifter in this car, it is by far one of the best gearboxes around, solid short shifting 6 speed. LONG LIVE STICKSHIFTERS!!!!

I have the same problem; first mention I've heard of it. I will print out this page and bring it to the dealer when I get my next service done.

my ilx 2013 2.4 l 6 speed has now 105,000 kms, do you think it may still be fixed ? i made the local dealer in st catherines, ontario aware of this issue before the 100,000 kms but they could not duplicate the squeal at that time so it was arranged to bring it in later when the problem becomes more frequent.

Can someone describe this sound in greater detail? Does it sound like it's coming from the front of the car? I think I may have this problem, thought it was my brakes at first. It usually occurs after I have been driving the car for 10 minutes or so; I never hear it sooner than that.

It is always worth a try, if not hopefully it doesn't cost much to fix it. I believe Acura had to order a part and there is some labor involved as it does have to do with the clutch so labor will be the issue.

Hey Twelve AM, it does sound like it is coming from the front of the car, as it actually originates from the transmission. It sounds like a murrmer or squeaking, that only really occurs when you are starting from a stop in first gear.

Thank you both for the info. That video confirmed the noise I've been hearing. Will be taking my car in soon as I still have some power train warranty left.

thx twelve am. nice to hear it helped you. i'd like to hear how your warranty repair went with your dealer. when i took mine in the mechanic could not duplicate this noise so they told me to wait and bring it in again when the noise becomes more frequent. by then my acura may have 110,000 or 120,000 kms and am hoping that they will still honour the 100k drivetrain warranty.
regards, crazyvlad

Hey yall. Took my car in finally (I know I said I would months ago). I handed them a printout of Chriff's sheet above and explained the sound I was hearing. After taking it in for a $225 diagnostic, the tech agreed the sound I was hearing was a result of the clutch. Parts were ordered and I am being covered entirely under the powertrain warranty (diagnostic fee waived as well). I'm in a white loaner TLX until Wednesday.

Crazy to hear about this issue is still happening on the ILX. This issue was happening on the 1st gen TSX (2004-2008) and the 9th gen civic (2012-2015)

I've mentioned it each of the last 2 or 3 times I brought the car in for service; they were not able to duplicate it and told me that the clutch looks OK and appears to be wearing normally. I still hear the sound from time to time but it seems to depend on me and how I engage the clutch in 1st gear, how much gas I give it and at what point, &c. Strange.

I am sure they have not actually looked at the clutch.... For me it was more consistent, but usually came on when I was easing into gear from a stop, slow start (similar to Crazyvlad's video above). GrafZeppelin127, I would just be persistent and try to push the matter for them to fix it for you. They generally don't want to do the work as it is usually labor intensive working with clutches.

At the very list make sure it is heavily documented in case the warranty runs out and the issue occurs more regularly - At least that way they will hopefully fix the problem because you have brought it up multiple times and it was their issue that they could not find the problem until after the warranty expired

Best of luck

great news...my acura ilx 2013 2.4l dynamic with 110k kms has a similar problem. just waiting for it to become more frequent an then i'll try to get it fixed under warranty...the dealer was made aware of this shifting problem at 96k kms when still in warranty so hopefully they'll honour the repair costs at n/c to me when i bring it in

My brother's 2004 TSX had this issue and Acura didn't see any damage when they replaced the clutch at 200k.

Picked up the car today. The clutch and shifts are so buttery. I can't believe this is how it supposedly came from the factory. For the record, the dealership replaced my pressure plate and throw out bearing under warranty and cited a manufacturing defect as the cause of the issue. The noise is gone.
