2017 Acura ILX Ice Build Up In Winter

Hi all, I’m new here on this forum and this is my first winter with my 2017 Acura ILX.

Lately, since it has been snowing more, I’ve been noticing very bad ice/slush build up below the windshield where the windshield wipers rest.

As a result, there’s a lot of ice on the windshield wipers themselves which causes large streaks that makes it very difficult to see while driving.

I was wondering if any other ILX owners are also experiencing this and if there are any tips on what I can do to reduce this.

So far I’ve changed to winter wipers, carry a cloth to wipe the blades, and make sure I clear the ice and snow completely from the windshield including the area where it builds up.

My next step is to change to a winter windshield washer fluid with de-icer as I’m not sure exactly what the stock fluid is and if there’s any de-icer in it.

Happy Holidays!

This happens to all cars. But I know what you mean, I hate streaks too and sometimes in really cold weather entire areas don’t get wiped and turns to ice shortly after.

What I usually do is, the night before or when I leave the car just lift the wipers so it’s standing up. Then before driving off I clean the windshield first then the wipers and all is good after.

I also have the remote start too so that helps with melting the ice off the windshield as well.

Yes, I've had this happen the past few days because of the temperatures and snow. I had them lifted overnight so they don't freeze to the windshield. Cleaned it well in the morning but get some ice build up while driving to work. Doesn't get too bad where it affects visibility but it does streak a bit.

I've had this happen as well; the ice/snow buildup at and and below the base of the windshield causes the wiper to physically lift and miss the glass entirely in places, creating a highly dangerous condition when driving while it's snowing. This strikes me as a very serious design flaw.

I think the issue is that the wipers rest below the part of the windshield that gets heated. Having the front windshield heater on helps a bit but not by much. I've never had issues with older cars which have the wipers seated at the heated area of the windshield.

Thanks for the responses guys. At least I know I’m not the only one experiencing this issue.

I also believe this issue is due to the wiper blades resting below the point where the heat hits the windshield. All of my previous cars didn’t have this problem.

So far the car is great and the only negatives I can think of are the ice issue with the wipers, the plastic wind deflector under the car scratches when backing out of the driveway, and no 60/40 rear seats (but we already knew this before buying).

I guess we’ll just have to live with the ice issue. It just sucks for longer trips when it’s snowing.
