2015 & 2016 Models: your experiences?

Hello! I am new here and this is my first post.

I have owned a 2002 RSX for the past 15 years and it’s time to replace it.

I have driven both the 2015 and 2016 ILX’s. I like both. I don’t notice much of the power increase on the 2016 while test driving. Nor do I see much of a difference in cabin noise.

That said, I don’t drive these cars everyday and wanted to hear anyone’s experience that may have owned both.

What one did you like better and why?

Any maintainence issues?

Thanks for your thoughts!

2016 got a power increase and new 8sp DCT transmission. I'd say that in itself is reason enough for choosing 2016 over 2015. Also, 2016 has restyled front and rear, which may not be to everyone's taste but it does come with standard LED headlights. 2016 also has newer infotainment stack.

I own a '13 (same as the '15) and have driven a '16 for a couple days as a loaner.

I think you misjudged the noise. The '16 was definitely quieter. Otherwise, it's do you prefer manual or a DCT? I think the '16+ trannies have also had more issues. I do like the small details they put into the '16 (suede seat covers, memory seat, power passenger seat).

There actually is no more issue with the 16+ trannies. There was a shifting jerkiness when coming to stop issue that was resolved by a TSB. The 16+ is definitely a nicer car but of course it's newer and would cost more. I would have never considered a pre-16 version (I have driven them as service loaners and found them not much nicer than a Civic at the time) but the 16 came out as I was needing a new car and it ticked the boxes. Also, since the ILX doesn't sell well in general, great deals are to be had on new ones. I got mine for $4500 under the published invoice price.

Honestly it comes down to a couple things.....

1) If you want a manual there is no option in the 2016 and newer
2) Styling - Personally I prefer some of the styling queues of the pre 2016 version, and some of the styling of the newer (Hence why I have changed my 2013 and made it look a little more modern)
3) Budget - If you are actually looking between only 2015 and 2016 then I would have to say, go for the 2016. The features are better on the newer version, will hold resale a bit better as it closer to the current version of the ILX.
4) Aftermarket performance upgrades - Depending on what version you pick up of the 2015, there is generally a little more mods available for the 2015 over the 2016 and newer.

However after considering the above and you decide that you do not care to really do much mods, and don't want a manual transmission (only available in the 2013-2015 Dynamic version) then go with a 2016. The newer engine also has a direct injection engine which should save you a few $ in fuel economy (however may cost you a few dollars to clean the engine between 50,000-80,000 kms via Walnut blasting?).

Good luck!

P.S. - If you wait another year or so then the ILX Type S should be announced or become available - That one should come with the new 2.0L Turbo (same as in the Civic Type R - Perhaps tuned down a little)

I have the V6 TLX (2018) but ILX with 2.0T is practically my dream car (as far as ones that I might actually purchase, at least). I just hope you're right, and they do make a "Type S" with a "sport" suspension and that they price it lower than the TLX... (And if it's "tuned down a little", that's cool, because maybe the price will not be "tuned up" so much, and we can apply a Hondata "Level 2" tune ourselves)

I personally don't care about a manual. It's just too painful to drive in traffic. The DCT in the 16+ is very nice. Shifts faster than you could with a manual so it's the best of both worlds.
