Hi, I have a 2003 TL Type S, 120k miles, good shape. transmission has slipped and shop wants to rebuild for 3400, my friend the gearhead says his mechanic friend said that rebuilding 01-10 honda/acura transmission is a bad idea because the problem will reappear.
he recommends buying a used transmission and putting that in.
can anyone reccomend a good source for buying the used one?
or having it installed in NJ/NYC area?

should i even be fixing it? i want to keep it if it makes sense.

You need to add a fourth polling option: "Buy a used or rebuilt BAYA transmission and have it put in your car."

What you may not know is the BAYA (which came exclusively in the 2006-2007 non-hybrid V6 Accords (often referred to as the AV6 transmission). The BAYA is a much improved 5-Speed auto which will mate up to your 2G TL just by moving over a few sensors.

Thanks, I dont think I can change the polling option, but using a BAYA or AV6 could certainly be a good choice. can you point me to any further info or explain more about this choice?

I searched for AV6 and there is a guy in North NJ who does them , however he has been banned and i am not sure if it is because he did a bad job or anything.
can anyone else provide info on how/who can do this?

Procure your own AV6, find a local transmission shop on Yelp and just take it there. Just tell them to swap in the transmission.

I have tried two local places from yelp and they are both unwilling to put an accord trans in an acura. i would be unable to identify a good condition trans if buying it myself.

Your issue was telling them it was a Honda transmission.

Have them rebuild everything inside and you won't have to figure out if it's 'good or bad'

The AV6 transmission has been completed and I picked the car up today! TY all for your help, I will lay out some of my experience for anyone considering doing it.

Found one local place that would do it, even though they had never done it. Most places refused to do it and said it wouldn't work. After talking to some of them it was clear to me none of them had any specific knowledge.
I ended up using a mechanic from this forum, Paul in Clifton, he was on these forums as acrdr. He was banned for reasons I am not clear on. Nevertheless, I found his contact info and emailed him.
He was willing to do it. He helped me find a suitable AV6 used, i purchased it for 1k from a bensalem PA junkyard, the listing stated it had 52k miles on it. It was the lowest mileage one I found and convenient to my commute.
The shop was not willing to let me use a credit card if I was putting it in an acura TL and wanted a VIN of the honda accord it was going to be going into before selling it to me on a credit card.
So I found a 07 accord for sale on line with a VIN and gave them that.
Bought the transmission, drove it from bensalem pa to clifton PA. the car was towed to clifton.
Took about 5 days and i picked up the car today, it runs great, better than the original transmission.
I am very glad that the forum members and Paul were able to help me out.

Why in the hell would a salvage yard care what your'e doing with the transmission and how does that relate to cash vs. credit card?

This was a common theme on both this project and a past one which involved buying a used throttle assembly to replace a broken cruise control wire in the TL.
The salvage yard and mechanic shops offer warranties on all projects. The mechanics (some of them) WOULD NOT do a job they didn't feel comfortable offering their warranty on. So several mechanics just refused to install used salvage parts for me.
For both the salvage yard and mechanic, as well as any business, taking a credit card for payment means the consumer can contest the charge if they want, and if the consumer buys the part for a project that CANT work and doesn't work and then complains to the credit card company, the salvage yard MIGHT lose payment if the credit card company decides the consumer was right. So they would only take cash, and that is why I had to find a VIN to use.

I'm on Car Part.com looking at trannys from 2006 V6 accords close to me.. I was reading a thread discussing torque converter size being 10.25 inches or 11..Something about MAYA & BAYA and it has me all in confusion again as to what to purchase because I dont want to go through the stress of having wrong size TC.. I have a 2002 Type S.. Should I look at 2007s instead and also what mileage range ?

I'm already freaked out about that shops won't swap if not going into an accord. I only got 1 reputable transmission shop in my area. What should I say in terms of convincing them to do it?

I bought the BAYA transmission, that is the one you want, according to this both the 06&07 are baya
"2003-2004 v6 Accord got the MAYA and 2005-2007 the BAYA. I think the MAYA is made in Japan and the BAYA in the US. The MCLA and BCLA are for the 4 cylinder (not sure about that). I guess in the BAYA the issue was fixed at the factory. But I still can't explain how come my '03 has a BAYA and the jet kit installed, so I think its all a mixed bag of transmissions and nobody really knows whats going on with that story, except of course Honda."

as for mileage, obviously the less the better. the one i bought was 52K miles. i think a common lifespan for an good automatic transmission is 150-200k so obviously dont buy one close to that. i found that the prices were not that related to the mileage so i drove the extra distance to get a low mileage one that wasnt too expensive.

as to the shops, dont buy the transmission until you find someone who will do it.
You will have to convince them it fits and will work, and that the fit is going to be ok. search the forums for the technical specs and details on doing the swap and show that to them.

I'm also in the process of doing an AV6 swap. albeit with a remanufactured BAYA transmission. Did you guys replace anything else while performing the swap? any snags along the way, or things that you wished you had done after completing it? glad to hear that its driving better than before


nrg200, that same guy in that forum says that his 2003 Accord had the BAYA transmission. I had previously used that in my post with using that link to show that BAYAs were in ALL US Honda Accord V6s, 2003-2007, with BAYA being built in US and MAYAs being build in Japan.

This substantiates my idea of how rumors online spread so easily with regards to half-confirmed knowledge..

TY! He changed the axle seals and trans filter and rear main engine seal, he thought they needed to be replaced. other than that i dont think anything was replaced.
nothing really that i wish i had done differently, it went pretty smoothly.
yeah there is alot of mistaken beliefs on the internet- luckily this forum is usually pretty solid.
