I plan to update to the 255/40/17 on my current wheels to the Mich PS 2's and then put same size on the second set of wheels using the Mich PA2's for winter. Since these will be changed depending on the season I should get 3 - 4 years out of the two sets. I have an 07 TL - S and I bought the second set of wheels when I bought the car in Feb.

They're a great competition tire, not a street tire, very soft and only 8/32" when new, so won't last very long. Also requires a 8.5" rim minimum to keep tread flat, and are about 1/2" smaller than the stock 235 tires.

what do you mean they are 1/2" smaller than stock 235?

well.. it was fun tracking with those RA-1... it felt like a different car!!!! =)

I vote"Yes". It would be the same thing to fit a 265 onto a 8.5" rim. Actually, the 265 would have a slightly easier fit theoritically. The 265 is 0.4" larger than a 255, and the rim is 0.5" wider. So, the 265 is gaining a 0.1" extra room (so to speak).
BUT, this is provided that we are talking about a 40 or 45 profile tire, NOT a 35 or 30 profile. The 35 and 30 profile has too little of a sidewall to strectch onto the too small rim.

There is a lot of clearance, even with my 255/40-17 tires. I checked the clearance by turning the wheels and watching the clearance of the tires. However, this only checks for clearance as the wheel goes from lock-to-lock (turning all way left and right), and it does Not check for clearance as the suspension travels upward. The clearance around the wheel wells as the suspension goes over a bump is my only concern with the 265 tire. The only thing I can add in this respect is that my 255/40 have NEVER EVER rubbed ANYWHERE, and I like to "motocross" over bumps (ie, I go fast over bumps causing a lot of suspension movement).
In conclusion, IF YOU HAVE NOT LOWERED YOUR CAR and the tire overall diameter is 25.5" or less, I would give it a try. Just ask the place you are buying the tires from if you can return the tires (provided that the rubbing did not damage them....oops) if you have driven on them for a day or so. I know that Discount Tire offers this. I even did it with my wife's RL. I purchased some slightly lower profile tires for her RL, had them mounted, and then the wife said "they look ugly". Took it back to Discount tire, and they replaced them with no hassle.

aznbo187,
The tightest area for clearance that I know is shown in the pic below with the red arrow. This is the area along the back of the front tire. With my 255, I still have enough room to put my finger between the knuckle arm and the tire. So, I am speculating that there is enough room for the 265. The 265 is 0.4" wider than my 255. We half this to get an additional 0.2" width on the inner side. When I checked mine, there was approx 1/2" clearance, so your additional 0.2" width should fit (although it is a close fit). Just be sure to check this spot if you get the 265's on 8.5" rims.

Inaccurate,
Thanks again for the thorough explanation. It's helped a lot in making my decision on the tire size to get. I think the only problem I have right now would be offset, and height clearance. I'm running on tein basic's and with a 245's on a 19 inch rim I have a tiny bit of rubbing on large dips with a full car, but this is with a 30 offset.
I'm hoping with a larger offset, the wheel will be able to sit more flush in the fender, giving it more vertical clearance. Anyway, I'll keep you guys posted!

I just traded my '05, and from the treadwear depth on the Michelin Pilot A/S's 245/40/17, would have gone about 52,000. I've owned this type of tire for well over 120,000 miles now, and have never expereinced short life. No less than 45,000 at worst.
I had them put on my new '07 before taking delivery, I like them that much!
Stock size though, of 235/45/17 on my new one.

If you are looking at great summer tires and different great winter tires go with two sets of tires. I plan to use 255 Mich PS2's for the summer (warm) temps and 255 Mich PA2's for winter (colder) temps. Since I'm not planning to run these sets all year round I'll get better warm and cold weather handling and longer (calender wise) usage. A/S tires are a compromise and since I bought the TL - S ... why compromise?

I was thinking about getting these: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....e1=yes&place=2
Problem is that they only come in 255/45/17
You guys think that will be a problem on my 05 6MT?

I am not as talented as "Inaccurate" in doing a write up, but to sum up the upgrade...
- ride seems softer
- cars feels like its stuck on road. (mind you I make some very sharp turns)
- I have had almost 6000 miles on my Kumoho, and face NO PROBLEMS.
- I had no trouble getting them installed on my stock rims.
Also here are some helpful links to compare the SIZE difference in theory.

Without digging thru all 13+ pages, I ordered my second set of 255/40R17's yesterday. They are shipping friday. I might go back to the stock size. These tires only lasted 12K miles. The outside and middle are fine. About 2-3" on the inside of all four tires are bald and the thing rides like the Space Shuttle on liftoff.
Was it the tires size difference that caused this or because I did not get the car aligned when I had them installed?

Be aware that there is a TSB about rear tire wear for 04 and early 05 models due to a bump-stop that was too soft in the back. If your vin is effected, you might want to go to the dealer and have the bump-stops changed...

I agree with the response above.
The 255/40 size on the oem rims did not cause your quick and unusual wear. I highly recommend that you get a high-quality alignment.
This sorta of quick and unusual wear is usually caused by alignment issues and/or poor quality tires (cheap brand). What brand and model of tire did you have that had the quick and unusual wear ?
Granted, the harsh ride could had easily been caused by the lower 40 profile tire versus the oem 45 profile. However, with the right 40-profile tire selection, this harsher ride than oem can be avoided. This is one of the many reasons that I love the Goodyear F1-D3 tires.

The ride was perfect with the tires until the inside started to wear. It happened so slowly I did not notice it at first. My new tires shipped today. I will get them installed and the car aligned this weekend or early next week. What ticks me off the most is the current tires look new from the outside but are worthless. The OEM tires wore perfectly and I got 42K out of them by rotating at every oil change.
I did have the rear stops checked a while back. My car was not affected.
Thanks!
K

What is a bump stop? I've been reading this thread for quite some time, so I guess it's time to say I think the TL looks awesome with the larger tires. Since I just purchased PS-2's last year in OEM size, I'm not ready to change tire size yet. When they wear out, I'll be getting the wider tires....they just look sooo much better. Acura should have used the larger tire from "04 when the TL first came out.
Anyone know a link to the TSB for that bump stop issue. My TL is "04 so it might need the bump thing fixed. I've only got 12,000 total miles, and the PS-2's aren't showing any abnormal wear yet. I replaced the Bridgestone HP tires at 4000 miles...never did like them anyway.

I just had the bump stop TSB performed and I have been getting about 12k per set of tires. The bump stops help maintain the suspension geometry under heavy loads. The Acura techs will also perform an allignment with upadated specs. My 04 Rear Toe was at .21 and ,11 and they are both setting at .06 after the work was performed. My front tow was off even more, so hopefully I can get at least 20k out of my new Pilots

I am thinking of making the same change as I have these tires on one of my other cars and they are fantastic.
