Thread resurrection time! And what better thread than the granddaddy of tire threads. For anyone who is using 255/40/17 tires right now, do you have any current or recent pics from side on and/or 3/4 view? I am seriously considering this size for my next set of tires and a good percentage of the pic links from this thread are no longer valid. I am wondering about what the 255 looks like for wheel gap on a non-lowered TL.

You have a TLS? As the TLS spare (145/70-17) should be 25.0" in diameter, same as the 255/40-17, install the spare and you'll be able to see the gap.
Can't use a TL spare as they are only 24.5"
Probably not, that would be a huge sidewall. My 255/40/18 was 26" tall, and the 255/45/17 would be the same...on a 17! Cornering would be terrible, think Buick. But it'd probably ride pretty comfortable.

Yeah i think so as well. I think when stationary it will be okay (no rubbing) but when car is moving the suspension and body also moves so it would rub the tires. if compare aspect ratio on stock 17x8 rims:
oem tire: 45% of 235=105.75
tire#1: 45% of 255= 114.75 (now that's huge difference vs oem)
tire#2: 45% of 245= 110.25 (best in my opinion as it will fill the wheel wells good)
tire#3: 40% of 255= 102 (too small vs oem, tires look like donuts from sides)
Off course the width will depend on how wide the tread is.
I think i will go with 245-45-17 (comfortable ride and good looking).
I really want to go with the 255/40's, but after having bent two rims last year on separate occasions (and on stock 235/45 size tires) due to potholes, I would never hear the end of it if I got a smaller sidewall tire and bent another rim lol. It looks like I'm going to go with 245/45/17. A little more sidewall, more curb protection and a little more meat for the width.
So regarding my budget and after some research i got a deal on Yokohama Advan S4 255-40-17. So i decided to go bite the bullet. Will see how it goes. There is not much difference between oem and yoko's.
So here are the photos. Today i washed and cleaned the car. Tires feel good, i have more road feel and car feels planted to the road. Ride is a bit stiff as expected becuase i am coming from Michelin X-ice2 225-50-17 which are soft. The rims are not in pristine shape but they are okay for their age. Right now i am running 35psi front and 34 in rear. Any recommendations for tire pressure? My TL is 5 spd auto.

I don't think there is a significant difference in filling of wheel wells. They may be a bit smaller than oem but the thing is only you know that they are not oem everyone else will think they are oem. As far as the rubbing when car is moving i have had no problems so far i have put around 300km on them. With this size You will feel every inch of the road where the tires are touching. See the photos of inside i took after installation mind you the car was dirty at the time with all the salt and sh*t. Too much salt in Ontario.
Can anyone that is using 255/40/17 tires comment on what the tires look like after 25,000 or more miles? I like the look of them when new, but after wearing down a bit I can imagine the wheel gap is even larger.
I had the F-1's installed yesterday!! I have to say the car feels much more stable and as Inaccurate says feels like it is riding on rails. It makes the car feel like a much greater quality car. Well I'm off to visit the family.

I've been running 255/40/17 for over a year now on toyos. No issues man. They look great.
My first set of tires on my TL were Yokohama YK580 245/40-17. I didn't do any calculations at the time, but they ended up being a little too low profile, and they looked a little odd (especially when the tread wore down a bit). I had little complaint with the tires themselves, but for a little bit of extra road noise. They were very responsive and had excellent grip. I got 31,000 miles out of them, which was under the warranty, so I got a good pro-rate deal on my next set of tires.
I was looking to move to a 255/40-17 this time so they would fill the fenders a little better. But the Yokohama's aren't available in that size, so I went with the Continental DWS06 that everyone here raves about. I have to be honest, I can't stand the tires. I've put about 2,000 miles on them, and they feel like they're all over the road compared to my Yokohamas. They have a lot of sidewall give, and are not very responsive.
I knew when they were new they would be a little extra squishy in the sidewall, but they haven't stiffened up much. I would honestly return them right now if I could. They ride better than the Yokohamas, but are nowhere near in the sport department. They grip well, but they feel horrible.
Can anyone give any feedback on their experience with the DWS06?

YoKo's come in 255-40-17. That's what i have in pictures above. And so far they have been excellent i have driven them for 3000km through rain, ice, snow, freezing rain and they have held very well.

Thanks to this thread, I ended up getting 255/35-19 Continental DWS 06 tires on a 19x8 wheel.
I know it's not on OEM wheels, but it's still a 255 wide tire on an 8 inch width wheel. I've driven 300 miles on them so far and love the way they look and the way the car feels on the road (compared to stock base wheels with cheapo 235/45-27 tires).
Here's a pic of my setup (I hope it works, still new to this forum):
Stock base suspension, Akata 20mm front wheel spacers, Akata 25mm rear wheel spacers, 19"x8" +55mm offset 2013-2016 Accord Coupe HFP 19" Diamond Cut Wheels, and 255/35-19 Continental DWS 06 tires.
After 300 miles of driving, I have observed a slight decrease in acceleration --- probably due to the higher wheel+tire weight and the increase in overall diameter/circumference. But, comparing this setup to the stock base 07-08 wheel + cheapo 235/45-17 tires that I received with the car when I bought it a month ago, the car feels much more planted/steady at low speeds, high speeds, and corners/curves (not really a fair comparison, I know, just stating my observations).
Oh yeah! I forgot to mention that the ride is slightly more rough than the stock wheel+tire setup (sorta a given when upsizing 2" in wheel diameter). But, it's still completely acceptable, to me, for most roads in Cali.
Has anyone running 255/40s seen any feathering? I understand that feathering should be caused by a bad alignment (toe) rather than by wider tires, but trying to run down every possibility before I spend money.
Back story: I have the car in Italy right now, and drive significantly faster here than I did in the states. I've noticed that the car shakes above 80 mph. Nothing ridiculous, but I can definitely feel it in the seats and steering wheel. After some research on the shaking, and after having the tires balanced, I took it to the local mechanic for an alignment, and he didn't even bother; said he drove it and the tires are dangerous; only new tires will stop the shaking. I'm not a tire expert, but I believe they're "feathered", and I don't see how that can be dangerous (I understand there's less surface area on the road as a result of the wear, etc.). I assume a bad alignment caused the tires to wear that way, and I figured the alignment was the source of the shaking since I've had the tires balanced not long ago, so my theory makes sense to me.
The mechanic also said these are cheap tires, which is why they wore like they did, and I should buy higher quality ones next time to ensure this doesn't happen again. I have General G-MAX AS-03s, and while they were definitely conservatively priced, I don't think they're low quality or cheap. This is the second set of these I've had, but like I said above, I drove much slower in the states than I do here. The speed is relevant because if these tires are the culprit (cheap/poor quality), I might have never noticed on the last set because I drove much slower on those ones.
I'm running 255's with 20mm rear and 15mm front spacers. Car is also dropped about 2" or so with Tein SA coils. With this setup there will be some minor rubbing on speed bumps and big dips. The fenders will need to be rolled but it's an easy job with a fender roller tool.
The car is a lot more aggressive and sporty looking. It also corners and handles like a beast which is a lot of fun . I have the dampers set at medium so it's still very comfortable to drive and it's not slammed so low that I have to worry about every little bump and dip in the road.
