Beware before modding your WRX

Black Box To Beat Tuners - - - Source: AutoExpress

The fight to beat unscrupulous tuners is being stepped up at Subaru. Plans are underway to fit its cars with 'black boxes' to record engine and ignition data to better protect its customers.

The systems will be specifically developed to spy on drivers who fit so-called 'invisible' tuning parts, including removable engine ECU chips and easy-to-change performance components such as exhausts. Usually, fitting non-standard parts like these will immediately invalidate an engine's warranty protection, and reduce a car's resale value.

Drivers fit them to improve performance, but remove them when making fraudulent warranty claims or before selling the car. "Black boxes are inevitable," said a Subaru UK spokesperson. "We'll have them fitted to all cars in the next two years."

Really dont have an issue with this. If i was buying a used car i would want to know if anything was done to it. Plus everyone knows it can void the warranty if you add things to the car now it is just harder to not get caught.

I think if you're going to buy a car like the STi, then you really don't care too much about the warrenty anyway. The mindset you have when you buy a car like that is to make it as fast as possible, so you already know you're going to mod it and void the warrenty. Trying to cover up the fact you've modded isn't right IMO, so I like this feature.

Your response makes no sense.

Sounds like a good idea for subaru.

And I am sure that by the time this hits the market, some tuner will figure out a way to trick it into thinking the car hasn't been modded.

Damn St. Patricks day brew.....I meant good for Suburu lol

But I also think that is what they TELL US. Have u read the EVO forums? Dealers are discarding warrenties left and right b/c of modding.

I kinda think this is a good thing. If you mod your car, you knowingly void your warranty, so you want to mess with your engine, then stand up and pay the consequences if something messes up. If that happens, don't make others pay for your mistake.

I dislike it. They've struck gold with the current STi design.

I like the front grill; if for no other reason than it being a different look (atleast in the U.S.). They should run with the design.

Those pics posted are from the video game WRC3 (not available in the US). Anyways, in the game you can unlock an "extreme" version of the WRC car. These are pictures of the "extreme" version, and some artists renditions of what appeared in the game.

Funny thing, though, is that these pictures had to be okayed by Subaru before they were put into the game, so it might be a hint at what the next redesign could be.

Regards

Nick

I hope not, nice profile but the front end would make it worse than the bug eye version. Rather see a compact version of the legacy design.
