Koenigsegg: Regera News

Not enough HP...and not fast enough.

Only yesterday, Koenigsegg confirmed plans to unveil a new RS version of its Agera supercar at the upcoming 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Now the Swedish firm has announced a second model which it describes as a “megacar,” just like it does with its One:1, currently the world’s most powerful production car.

Koenigsegg’s second car for the Geneva Motor Show is called the Regera, and it’s likely packing at least 1,341 horsepower, or one megawatt of power if you’re used to measuring a car’s power in terms of watts, hence the megacar descriptor. Since the One:1 produces 1,341 hp, Koenigsegg also refers to it as a megacar.

That’s about all we know about the Regera but there may be a clue in the car’s name. The name is possibly an amalgamation of the word “regeneration” and the existing “Agera” name. This would suggest that the upcoming car is based on the existing Agera but has some form of energy recovery system to match the tech offered by rival supercars like the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder. There’s also the possibility that we may see Koenigsegg finally debut its cam-less engine tech on the new car.

From their FB page

The Regera - a new Era

The Regera was created as a luxury Megacar alternative to Koenigsegg’s traditional extreme lightweight race-like road cars. Even though the One:1 and the Agera RS have surprising levels of practicality, creature comforts and features, their primary focus is, and has always been, to be the overall fastest cars on the planet – around a racetrack or elsewhere.

Regera is Swedish for “to Reign” - a suitable name for a machine that offers a never seen before combination of power, responsiveness and luxury, while maintaining an understated Scandinavian cool - In short, the Regera has a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde personality.

Even though the Regera is loaded with revolutionary technology and luxury, it still has a surprisingly low curb weight inspite of featuring 700 Hp electrical motors and an impressive 9 kWh liquid cooled battery pack.

Given the relative lightweight of the Regera, it can still perform competitively around a track and according to us, the only challenger around a track thatcould be faster, is another Koenigsegg.

However, out in the open the Regera will reign as the king of the road, as the fastest accelerating, most powerful production car ever. With the introduction of the Regera, Koenigsegg will, for the first time ever, have two parallel models in production.

From: Exclusive first photos of the new Koenigsegg Regera | Lovecars Blog

0 to 400 kph in under 20 seconds? Over 1500 bhp with over 200 nM of torque. A dry weight of just 1420 kgs. Please allow us to introduce you to the Koenigsegg Regera. Regera, meaning “To Reign” in Swedish, is a game changing new megacar created as an alternative to the Koenigsegg One:1 and the new Agera RS.

It’s the first car to feature the Koenigsegg Direct Drive (KDD) feature, which Koenigsegg insist doesn’t make it a hybrid. To put things into perspective, it features 700 hp electrical motors – almost 3 times as much as its closest hybrid rival, and a 9 kWh battery pack, which is also significant higher.

Interior technology includes Apple CarPlay, 3G and WiFi and a camera with the ability to record.

From here: First Look At Koenigsegg Regera: 1,500 HP From Direct Drive System

Koenigsegg’s second ‘megacar’, the Regera, has been revealed at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The Regera packs technologies never before seen in one of Koenigsegg’s products, enabling it to develop more power than any car ever in production. And yes, the car is headed for production. Koenigsegg has already confirmed a production run of 80 examples.
The Regera, whose name in Swedish means “to reign,” is powered by a sophisticated drivetrain that combines an internal combustion engine (in this case a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V-8) with an electric drive system Koenigsegg calls Direct Drive. Combined output is an incredible 1,500 horsepower and 1,475 pound-feet of torque.

So what exactly is the Direct Drive? The technology serves as a replacement for the transmission and doesn’t feature any gears or CVT elements, which means it also skips the inherently high energy losses associated with these. Instead, it relies on electric motors to directly power the wheels, hence the name Direct Drive.

These motors, three in total, supplement the energy from the internal combustion engine and also allow for torque vectoring and regenerative braking. One of the motors is integrated with the engine, helping to fill the torque curve, top up the batteries and serve as the starter motor. Additional motors are mounted to each of the rear wheels.

The three electric motors constitute the most powerful electrical motor setup in production car, replacing the gears of a normal transmission while adding power, torque and torque vectoring. And what’s most impressive is the fact that the Direct Drive system, including the 9.27-kWh battery to power the electric motors, only adds 194 pounds compared to a traditional transmission.

So what can the Regera do with 1,500 hp on tap? Some of the initial specs include 93-155 mph acceleration in just 3.2 seconds and 0-248 mph acceleration in less than 20 seconds! Suffice it to say, there will be few cars able to outrun a Regera.

^ Actually his best quality may not be engineering, but perseverance. No matter what, he never gave up.

A little surprised not to see that trademark circular pattern of buttons in the center console as seen in all the other Koenigsegg cars.

Press release...

Regera is Swedish for “to Reign” – a suitable name for a machine that offers a never seen before combination of power, responsiveness and luxury – creating a true Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde persona.

In spite of all its advanced technology and creature comforts, the Regera is comparatively light. Therefore, it can still perform competitively around a race circuit. According to us, the only Hyper/Megacar that could be faster around a circuit, is another Koenigsegg.

However, out in the open, the Regera will reign as the king of the road, as the fastest accelerating, most powerful production car ever.

The Regera will be handcrafted in only 80 examples. Apart from being a suitable production run for Koenigsegg´s newly upgraded and refurbished production facility, the number 80 also symbolizes the principle of domination, control and achievement in Pythagorean Numerology.

With the introduction of the Regera, Koenigsegg will, for the first time ever, have two parallel models in production.

The interior features; added insulation, 8 way electrically adjustable memory foam seats. A Koenigsegg 9” infotainment system, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, front, inner and rear camera system with recording capability, Apple CarPlay, supreme sound system, ambient lighting and many other great new features. The Regera also comes with front and rear parking sensors and remote diagnostic and firmware update capability.

Constellation DRL

A good design and layout of the DRL (Daylight Running Lights) gives character, as the DRL is what’s first seen when a car comes driving from a distance.

We wanted the Regera to stand out and clearly be recognized also from a far, so we came up with a novel idea that we call – Constellation DRL.

To get a constellation of stars effect, we scattered the LED´s, which make up the DRL, around the lamp cluster, giving the effect of star constellations on a night sky made up of polished carbon fiber.

A side effect is that the LED´s make the whole lamp cluster glitter and shine, as if there where diamonds thrown into them. That´s what we call – Koenigsegg cool.

The heart of the matter

The heart and soul of every Koenigsegg is its Internal Combustion Engine – the ICE. The ICE of the Regera follows the path of its siblings, based on the proven and extremely reliable Koenigsegg drysumped twin turbo, DOHC, 5.0 liter V8.

As before, the Koenigsegg V8 is the most downsized homologated production ICE in the world, with 220 Hp per liter engine (using regular pump gas). The compactness of the engine makes the Regera nimble, efficient and lightweight.

The difference to the Agera engine is that, given the electric propulsion of the Direct Drive system, we did not have to go as extreme on ICE power, as the combined output is way over 1500 Hp and over 2000 Nm torque, anyway. Given this we could install even smaller, faster spooling turbos on the Regera, further enhancing the ICE drivability and response.

A new level of luxury

The Direct Drive transmission of the Regera is capable of delivering never before experienced blistering response and performance while at the same time being able to deliver one of the smoothest and most soothing driving experiences. Given this high level of bi-polar characteristics, the rest of the car had to be up to the task of delivering blistering, lightweight performance at new levels of soothing luxury.

Therefore Koenigsegg developed a completely new rear sub frame and rear structure that allows the engine and transmission to rest on active soft mounts. When driving in normal conditions, the mounts stay soft and isolate engine noise and vibrations. When driving spirited, the mounts firm up to solidify the car and give greater response. The shock absorbers are active in height and stiffness – again allowing for the bi-polar behavior.

Furthermore, the Regera can be driven in absolute silence, as it is possible to go into full EV mode for shorter periods of time.

The first fully robotized car

Given the latest advances in compact lightweight hydraulics, Koenigsegg has managed to robotize the entire Regera with almost no weight addition. As the Regera features functions such as; active front and rear wings, chassis control and lifting system – the pumps and accumulators were already in place to connect a few more hydraulic operators. These in turn replaced gas struts of equal weight – resulting in minimal weight impact.

Due to the above, the Regera is the first car in the world that operates all body closures completely automatically. The spectacle to open and close the entire car simultaneously from the remote or smartphone, truly turns the Regera into a transformer.

On top of this, all body closures have soft latching mechanisms, giving the Regera a sophisticated feel. The fully robotized body system, with soft latches adds a mere 5 kg, making full robotization a very desirable option.

Furthermore the wing mirrors are auto-folding while the doors open, giving added practicality and visual drama, as the Dihedral Synchro Helix Doors swing out and rotate 90 degrees to fully clear the door opening, without protruding more than the width of the door – making them highly ergonomic.

Plug-in capability

The Regera utilizes an EV plug in feature. Behind the robotized rear number plate nestles a type 2 mode 3 charging port. This means that the Direct Drive Battery can be charged either by the combustion engine or through the charging port. The plug-in solution enabled us to create a novel feature we call – Battery Drain Mode, or BDM for short. For example, when there is around 50 km range left to the destination or next charging point, a preset geo location or a push on the touchscreen will trigger the BDM. This means the car calculates the driving behaviour and makes sure the battery is fully drained upon arrival and is ready for a full charge. This drastically minimize fuel consumption and lower C02 emissions as the fuel consumed has been correctly optimized for the length of the journey.

The world’s first fully foldable, active, top-mounted rear wing

The Koenigsegg One:1 featured the world’s first top mounted active rear wing. This was an innovative solution that maximized down force compared to its size and weight.

The Regera, being more luxury oriented, has taken this solution to the next level, allowing the wing also to fully fold down into the body work enhancing the cars elegance while parking and reducing drag while cruising. The wing´s active foldable mechanism, is a lightweight work of carbon fiber art and the movement is truly mesmerizing.

Sporting a unique exhaust-note, the Regera has a custom designed, sound tuned titanium system jointly developed by Akrapovic.

The novel exhaust system includes a fish tail outlet, envisioned by Christian, which has not been seen on a production car for the last half century, so we are excited to bring back the sound of the past!

Koenigsegg Direct Drive

As many of you have heard, Christian is not a fan of hybrids, as they are generally compromised when it comes to weight, complexity, cost, packaging and efficiency.

Given this, the Regera is not what we at Koenigsegg would call a hybrid, as it does not have the traditional shortcomings of a hybrid. Instead, the Regera is a new breed of Koenigsegg – and car for that matter.

Traditional, so called parallel, hybrids are compromised and heavy, as they have two independent propulsion systems. Alternatively, series hybrids are less compromised when it comes to weight, complexity and costs, but instead they are compromised when it comes to efficiency, as there is too much energy conversion going on.

This brings us to the Koenigsegg Direct Drive Transmission or KDD for short – invented by Christian von Koenigsegg and developed for the Regera by the Koenigsegg Advanced Engineering team. The patent pending KDD system replaces the combustion engines traditional transmission and gives the added benefit of pure EV mode. What is unique is that the KDD manages to create direct drive to rear axle from the combustion engine without the need of multitude gears or other traditional types of variable transmissions, with inherently high energy losses.

During highway travel, for example, the KDD reduces drivetrain losses, compared to traditional transmission or CVT by over 50%, as there is no step up or step down gear working in series with the final drive – just direct power transmission from the engine to the wheels.

To supplement the energy from the combustion engine and to allow for torque vectoring, regenerative braking, extreme drivers response, reverse and energy conversion, there are three YASA developed electric motors. YASA´s axial flux motors are extremely power dense and allow for direct drive, making them a key-ingredient for the KDD. One YASA for each rear wheel, giving direct drive – this time electric – and one on the crankshaft, giving torque-fill, electrical generation and starter motor functionality.

The three electric motors constitute the most powerful electrical motor set-up in production car history, replacing the gears of a normal transmission while adding; power, torque, torque vectoring and yet still able to remove weight.

The battery pack and PDU for the KDD were developed and manufactured together with Electric Supercar virtuoso Mate Rimac and his engineering team. The 620 V battery pack is of the latest fully flooded type and is the most power-dense battery pack ever created for a road going car with 9,27 kWh of energy, 67 liters of volume, and 115kg of weight. Still, a full 500 kW can momentarily be drawn during acceleration and over 150 kW can be absorbed by the battery-pack during regenerative braking and ICE power generation mode.

Every cell of the pack is carefully monitored for voltage, state of charge, health and temperature. The cells are enclosed in a fully machined aluminum casing for safety and stability. The battery is located in the most protected area of the car – the carbon-aramid chassis tunnel. The whole battery pack is actively cooled by external radiators and the Regera´s all new electrical air-conditioning system, which also can pre-cool the car via the Koenigsegg app on a warm day.

The complete KDD system, including the battery, adds a mere 88kg to the Regera´s weight, compared to what the Regera would have weighed with a traditional ICE, coupled to a 7 speed DCT transmission instead of the KDD. Presently no other hybrid Hypercar even comes close to this type of weight ratio for their electrification. This is interesting, as they all have smaller battery capacity and less electric power than the Regera.

To put it into perspective, the Regera has almost triple as many electric Bhp (700 Bhp) and over 300 Bhp more than its closest hybrid rival. Still the Regera manages to be very competitive weight wise, while including unusual features such as a six way adjustable electrical seat and a fully robotized body work. This is no small feature and it is a testament to the meticulous nature of the Koenigsegg engineering team.

The combination of electrical and combustion power is just mind boggling. When you get up to speed, the system really comes into play – How about 3.2 seconds between 150 to 250 km/h and under 20 seconds from 0 to 400 km/h?

So cheap!

Koenigsegg’s new Regera has been listed for sale by U.K. dealership SuperVettura in an online ad at Mobile.de, with the asking price set at a staggering 2,100,010 euros with taxes. That equates to about $2.36 million at current exchange rates.

Of course, the Regera is one of the most exclusive supercars in production, with just 80 examples planned, and it also happens to be one of the fastest cars money can buy. According to the ad, delivery will only commence on December 1 of 2016. That makes sense as the Regera was only shown for the first time a couple of months ago at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

The car, whose name in Sweden means “to reign”, is a hybrid supercar combining Koenigsegg’s familiar twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V-8 with an electric drive system via a fluid coupling system, which when closed, links the two together. Combined output is an incredible 1,500 horsepower and 1,475 pound-feet of torque.

Koenigsegg calls this setup the Direct Drive, and it means the Regera’s engine speed and wheel speed rise in direct proportion. According to Koenigsegg, the engine’s 8,250-rpm redline corresponds to a top speed of 248 mph.

In a separate ad, SuperVettura is offering Koenigsegg’s other recent model debut, the Agera RS, which can be had for 1,920,000 euros ($2.16 million) with taxes.

SuperVettura, based in Sunningdale, England, has been appointed the main dealer for the Swedish supercar marque in the U.K. Over here, New York’s Manhattan Motorcars is your gateway to the land of Koenigsegg.

Right, because the GT40 will cost 3-4 times as much as an NSX, and this will cost 15 times more than an NSX. Talk about show stealing for sure

Press release...

Koenigsegg Automotive AB is proud to unveil the Koenigsegg Regera in production specification, signaling a new era in Megacar performance.

The Koenigsegg Regera was introduced in concept form at the 2015 Geneva Auto Show to a rousing reception. Numerous customer orders were received during the show and have continued at a steady pace as the wider Koenigsegg family learns about the all-new philosophy and technology behind the Regera.

The 12 months since Geneva 2015 has seen the Regera evolve from a promising concept into an astounding reality, with the car put through an intense period of development, testing and homologation for worldwide sale.

So extensive was this development period, in fact, that over 3,000 changes were made to the concept vehicle. The weight savings achieved resulted in a curb weight – complete with all water, oils and fuel – of just 1590kgs. Dry weight is 1470kgs.

KOENIGSEGG DIRECT DRIVE

The patent-pending Koenigsegg Direct Drive system was the biggest challenge in the Regera development process, but it has also provided the biggest rewards. This is brand new technology that eliminates the weight, complexity and mechanical losses that come with a traditional gearbox. The end result is seamless, effortless driving that features blistering acceleration unlike any other car.

A number of enhancements have been made to elements of the Direct Drive system throughout the development process, making the Regera even more revolutionary than first envisioned.

Koenigsegg has developed a clutch-slip mechanism that uses the hydraulic coupling to convert torque at medium/high speeds during fast acceleration. This allows the combustion engine to gain revs and power, thereby giving the sensation of a traditional downshift with the associated aural enjoyment, even without the traditional gearbox.

Shift paddles remain on either side of the steering wheel. The left paddle is used to enhance the regenerative braking effect in recharging the battery pack. The right paddle is used to activate the hydraulic coupling's 'downshift' operation.

EXTREME BATTERY TECHNOLOGY

Koenigsegg worked extremely hard to find the best performing and safest battery pack possible for the Regera. This research and testing has resulted in an 800 volt, 4.5kWh battery pack, making the Regera the world's first 800V production car.

This extreme battery technology will now provide an amazing 525kW of discharge and up to 200kW of recharge.

The Koenigsegg Regera battery pack also boasts the highest cooling capacity of any battery in automotive use today. All electric vehicle manufacturers use coolant piped around the battery pack to draw heat from the batteries. There is always an area that traditional cooling pipes cannot reach, however. The Regera battery pack is housed in a sealed unit featuring optimized local coolant flooding across all critical heat-sensitive elements. Every critical surface within and around the battery stack is cooled as efficiently as possible.

The pièce de résistance is the battery pack's weight. The battery pack used in the production Regera uses Formula 1 grade, hand built cells that not only provide improved performance and regenerative capability, but also save 25kg in weight compared to the battery in the concept vehicle. This new, Formula 1 grade battery pack now weighs a mere 90kg whilst providing enough power to help the Regera to accelerate to 300km/h in just 10.9 seconds.

A NEW BREED OF PERFORMANCE

The Koenigsegg Regera represents a new and unprecedented era of high performance motoring. This is thanks to the car's massive 1500+ hp output, 2000+ Nm of torque and the Koenigsegg Direct Drive system used to put this power to the ground.

The Regera will reach 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, 0-200 in just 6.6 seconds and 0-300 in a blistering 10.9 seconds. Koenigsegg estimate a 0-400 km/h time of 20 seconds and acceleration from 150 to 250km/h in just 3.9 seconds.

Despite such scintillating performance, Regera owners can also expect the most refined driving experience yet from a Koenigsegg car. New active engine mounts provide a sense of isolation and peace within the cabin at lower speeds, but firm up for a more active driving experience when required – a true Jekyll and Hyde proposition.

Auto Motor and Sport was the first, and the only magazine so far, to test drive the Regera prototype. This is what they had to say:

"Power has never, and I say never, been this brutal, efficient and easy to use. This is a game changer of biblical proportions....... THE KING!"

NEW SOLUTIONS FROM IN-HOUSE RESEARCH

Although small, Koenigsegg has always been a remarkably self-sufficient and extremely vertically integrated vehicle producer focused on in-house solutions developed at the Koenigsegg facility in Ängelholm.

Components that all other manufacturers buy in such as, wheels, brake calipers, engine and transmission management systems are all designed, engineered and build in-house Koenigsegg. Similarly, the entire mechanical drivetrain from combustion engine to DirectDrive unit, is all created by Koenigsegg. The benefit of working this way is that critical systems get seamlessly integrated and continuously optimized over time, to levels otherwise unobtainable.

A shining example of the above is that the hydraulic coupling used in the Regera was is designed and developed completely in-house. The "HydraCoup" can provide slip with very limited heat build-up while maximizing torque conversion and lock-up functionality. It is light, strong and efficient, weighing no more than the lightweight dry clutch in the Agera. It also looks like a piece of artisan jewellery. The only way to reach the goals of low weight and maximum torque transfer was to do it in-house as nothing available in the market place came close to the required specification.

These solutions, along with a new external high voltage DC charger, smaller 800V AC compressor and a new super-compact bespoke and lightweight 800V DC/DC converter all mean that the production version of the Regera is significantly lighter than the prototype it is based on, which is highly unusual when progressing to production-ready materials.

COMFORT, CONVENIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

The interior of the Regera features optimum comfort and functionality.

Koenigsegg's unique 'Autoskin' function allows the driver to open the doors and front and rear hoods remotely using a lightweight hydraulic system. Buttons for operation of 'Autoskin' are available both on the driver's remote control key and via the centre console inside the car.
Additional compartments have been fitted in front of the driver and passenger, where personal items such as phones, wallets, etc can be stored.

The wing mirrors now fold automatically when the doors open to further increase the practicality of the dihedral synchrohelix door actuation system. Furthermore, as the Autoskin function allows for the doors to open automatically, we have fitted the doors and wing mirrors with proximity sensors in order to safeguard against the doors striking nearby objects (curb, low roof, etc) while opening or closing.

To complement the rear camera and the side door cameras, there is also the option of a forward facing camera that works together with the other cameras in the car to enable a birds-eye view of the of the car while parking or maneuvering in confined areas.

Apple CarPlay is standard equipment in the Regera and with Wi-Fi functionality, there is no longer any need to connect a phone via USB. Inductive charging ensures that an owner's phone remains ready for use once a journey has ended.

The seats now feature heating and electrical adjustment with memory function. All in all the Regera is truly a fusion of luxury, comfort and race car performance. Compromise is avoided at all cost. A sense of theatre, mega-performance, luxury and light weight are all in equal focus like never before.

CONCLUSION

Koenigsegg's vision has always been to find the best possible solution to a given challenge. Our enduring goal is maximum performance; the pursuit of automotive perfection. The Regera is the latest embodiment of that vision.

It is an extraordinary leap into the future of extreme high performance motoring. Whether it be a contest of performance or a contest of ideas, the Regera concedes nothing. It is a gracious grand tourer, a technical tour-de-force and of course, we still maintain that the only way to be faster around a racetrack than the Regera is to drive another Koenigsegg.

It is yet another car from Ängelholm to earn the Megacar moniker.

All new technologies developed by Koenigsegg have integrated seamlessly into the Regera to enhance the total experience and give our customers the best luxury performance car available for sale in the world today.

We are very much looking forward to sharing the Regera experience with the world over the coming months as we commence the build of customer cars in the immediate future and deliveries at the end of 2016.
