I got mine in Sept of 2000 (2001 CLS)

Here is the note:

Your 2001 Acura CL is included in the Transmission Warranty Extension.

Description 2001 TRANS WARRANTY EXT
Date 9/27/2002
Type Warranty Extension Campaign
Status Open
Press Release for this recall

MORE INFO:

"October 2002

Automatic Transmission Warranty Extension

Dear 3.2TL and 3.2CL Owners:

American Honda is announcing a warranty extension for the automatic transmission on all 2000-02 3.2TLs, all 2001-02 3.2CLs, and some 2003 3.2TLs and 3.2CLs. The automatic transmission and torque converter are now covered for a total of 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date of original sale. We are providing this warranty extension because a higher than normal number of automatic transmissions in certain vehicles may have problems due to defects in material or workmanship beyond the 4-year, 50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty.

How do I know if there is a problem with my vehicle's automatic transmission?
If you think your vehicle has a transmission problem, refer to the operating characteristics below. Understanding these characteristics can help you decide if you need to call your Acura dealer.

These characteristics are normal; they should not require you to call your Acura dealer.

Quick downshifts. The transmission has a computerized control system called grade logic. When going down a hill, even a light touch of the brake pedal can cause grade lobic to downshift to the next lower gear. Downshifting helps to slow the vehicle through engine braking.

Does not always shift through the full range of gears. This can also be caused by the grade logic system keeping the transmission in the optimum gear for different driving conditions.

Mechanical noise when selecting a forward or reverse gear. It's normal to hear a slight mechanical noise when moving the shift lever from one gear to another. This noise can sound abnormally loud if any of the windows are down and you are parked next to a wall or another vehicle.

Vehicle may not hold its position when stopped on an incline in gear (may roll backward when the brake pedal is released). This can occur on most Acura-made vehicles. It is one of the measures used to improve fuel economy.

Hard shifts before the engine warms up. By design, the transmission shifts a little harder when the engine is cold. It returns to smoother shifting when the engine warms up.

These characteristics are not normal; if you experience any of them, call your Acura dealer.

While driving, the D5 indicator on the instrument panel flashes.

D5 Indicator

An abnormally loud noise from the transmission.
Extremely slow or delayed gear engagement, upshifts, or downshifts.
Abnormal gear slippage during upshifts or downshifts.
Erratic or excessively harsh shifting.
Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) leaks.

In the next few weeks, owners of potentially affected vehicles will be sent a copy of this letter along with reimbursement instructions in case they previously paid to have the transmission repaired or replaced.

It's important to maintain your vehicle's transmission according to the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. Not maintaining the transmission properly can void the warranty coverage.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely,

AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO., INC.
Acura Automobile Division "

Overall I feel Acuras are great cars. Currently I own a Silver 2001
CL-S w/NAV (43K mi). The transmission began slipping for 2
days, it only slipped twice over this timespan and just slightly, I
took it to an Acura service department here in TX for an overdue
37.5K service, I went ahead and just got the 45K service since it
included having the transmission fluid changed, and now
they are in the process of replacing the transmission without
hesitation. I didn't put a single amount of effort in trying to get it
replaced, go figure? My loan car (an RSX) is outside. In the past
I owned an 87 Acura 2 dr legend, and I recall the transmission
having problems as well. The service requirements stated to have
the transmission fluid be changed every 15K miles, most cars are
30K. If I remember correctly the 87 model was one of the first
years the 2 dr legend was introduced. After owning many cars it
is one thing I have noticed is to be wary of a newly redesigned
cars it's first couple of years. This is to be said with almost any
product that is engineered, it is almost impossible to test all the
possible states or uses of any one product depending on the
complexity. Since Acura/Honda redesigns a car every 4 yrs, unlike
GM it has less time to work out the new kinks anybody remember
how long it took the 84 Vette to get a major redesign???, GM still
can't seem to get it right, I feel Acura provides some of
the best products considering, price, performance, value, luxury,
features, and overall reliability. My brother-n-law has a 2000
Mercedes CLK 320, and he doesnt have a "touch screen" nav, he
has to use a clunky knob and the graphics are almost black &
white, no xenon headlights, no heated seats, etc. Not to
mention it only has 215hp and weighs as much as whale, and
also seems to have more than its own share of problems
eventhough its more than a couple of years into its new design,
and costs 70% more than what I own. Acura owners take pride
in what you own.

NHTSA rep called me today

NHTSA rep called and wanted details about the transmission failure. The abrupt downshift was what he was most concerned about and said that they were gathering info on how many people have had this problem and didn't know if would lead to anything. It was good to know that they at least where looking into it. He also said I needed to fill out a warranty card in owners manual and mail it in so that Acura knows who to send warranty letters too. Is this what I need to do to get a letter from Acura If I bought the extended warranty anyway?

I'm wondering about this too. I've assumed that since the Acura dealer I go to has my current address that Acura would have no problem figuring out where to send the extended warranty info.

We just had to have the wife's 2000 TL tranny replaced - 43k miles. Santa Monica Acura did it with absolutely no fuss or hassle, and they gave her a 2002 TL as a loaner. Since she's nearing the end of her 50k warranty, and we WILL NOT own this car w/o a warranty, we're wondering what the deal is with the extended warranty.

Any info. is appreciated.

Has anyone with an early (March 1990) build date gotten their letter yet? Mine was built in March 1990 and I have not received anything to date. It seems that Acura started mailing letters first for affected 2003 models, then 2002. Anyone with an early CL-S gotten their letter? Thanks.

Transmission not shifting correctly 2-3

I'm new to this website, and I think it's dope...... I haven't been able to read up on the post about transmission problems, since I don't have much time during the week.. I decided to ask you guys WHY DOES MY 2001 CLS HAVE TROUBLE SHIFTING FROM 2ND-3RD IN D5????. If I don't let off on the gas, it will nearly redline... Man, this car has only 25k on it and I was supprised it was the transmission. I was just thinking the timing is off but I heard some people have lots of problems with the transmission.

Tranny

Hey pablo2003. I'm getting my 2001 cls with 24K miles back today from the dealer with a new tranny. My car started last week doing the same. It would ' hang" between 2nd and 3rd @ about 5500 -6000 rpm with about 2/3 throttle. I would let up and it would shift. Then it started happening 1-2 shift, then tranny went out. Car just revved in any gear as if it was in neutral. Now I read about the CL shifting into 2nd at highway speeds. That's BS! Car breaking down is one thing, but if it can get you killed is another.

Re: Tranny

Mine has done this 3 or 4 Times, but if they Can't "reproduce" it when you take it in, what are you going to do, wait until it becomes REPRODUCABLE and pronounced everytime, hence Dangerous ?

I received my letter back in December. My transmission just went out last week at 35000. Brought it to the dealer but they refused cause the warranty was cancelled back in Febuary 2002. They said that my car have savage title and its not cover. That is BS. I asked them if mine was cancelled back in Feb then why Acura send me the recall statement on Dec. they have no comment. It didn't stated anything about savage car not cover on the recall statement.

i recently went to the dealer because they also had a recall on the ignition switch to be replace and they also refused to fix it becuase my car was salvage title.. ikno for a fact its bs becuase they wont do it for free..they sent the notice to me w/ out telling me if the title mattered or not..fykers! i also got my tranny replaced and cost me over one thousand bucks! to fix also i had to replace a sensor for it which was couple hundred. the thing that piss me off more is that they know about all these problems but they kick back with there fingers in there ass and dont do shit about it..... i love my 3.0 and i want it to work right goddamn it!

Extended 7yrs/100k Transmission warranty is for Transmission only

For warped rotors, this issue applies to the normal
4yr./ 50,000mile standard warranty and is covered under a technical service bulletin (TSB).

Transmission

The new Guy on the block I guess. I just traded a 2002 A6 Avant Quattro for a new 2003 CL type S with automatic. What an improvement. A lot of TLC for 18,000 miles under warranty could not stop three sets of brake rotors, noisy ride between 70-80 (tried balancing, rebalancing, new wheels/tires), dead radio three times, overheate donce, no A/C on hot day.
I guess I am saying I love this car, it drives and executes better than the Audi almost every way imaginable. I don't know much about the transmission problems with the CL automatic other than a few articles I read. Am I immune since I got a late 2003? If not, what should I prepare for. Thanks!!

Second owner question

Will the warranty cover your car if you are the second owner of it? My girlfriend got her 2001 cl-s through her uncle at the auto auction about 4 months ago and it seems the transmission has failed already. Its currently at the acura dealership getting looked at, i need to know if it will be covered by acura, any info will help. thanks

KavexTrax,
My '01 CLs is at 48K. Could the rotors be warped even if i have no signifigant breaking probs? Should i take it in anyways and get them checked? Better yet have a non dealer trusty mechanic check them 1st?

Could someone be kind enough and to tell me if the exteneded warrenty will be included on the CL that we just bought from a Honda Dealership yesturday? We checked the carfax and it said taht we only have 15,000 miles left on the 50,000 miles power train warrenty. Is our car included in this exteneded warrenty offer?
