hid conversion especially if you can find a 55w one (most seem to be only 35w)
i would not be worried about the lense, i be more worried about the wiring and connections if you went with a higher wattage bulb

didn't say that but by searching i was i thought they had halogen (like headlights) bulbs in them, but i guess the 01's did not and only had 5 watt bulbs in them, so you have to convert to the newer foglights for any signifcant light output

The 01-02 road lamps had nothing but that weak little 5watt bulb in them.

Retrofit or get actual fog lights.

If you just want to swap bulbs, some people use polarg or piaa bulbs in the roadlamps. They're not HID's by any means, but they light up the housing at night way better than the stock bulbs. I use Polargs in mine, and I'm satisfied with the way they look.

It really depends on the look you want and the time and money you're willing to spend.

x2 on the Polarg or PIAA bulbs.

they are a little big to fit in the hole but all you need to do is shave it down a little. several members have it and they report no melting, except 1 guy i think but that was a while ago. cheap and easy to install

I was looking for the same thing. There was a vendor on here that sold LED's that were perfect! I love the way mine look, they match the HID's perfect and are hella bright. Only problem is I can't seem to find him on here any more to order more. I had one burn out on me. You can find them on ebay. Here are a couple day shots, they are insanely bright!

The pictures are exactly representative of how bright the bulbs are!
