HandfreeLink Static

Hi all -

I have a 2016 RLX Hybrid and notice that when I have a bluetooth call (iPhone 7 iOS 10.11) the speaker volume is accompanied by static when the speaker is active. Radio and bluetooth audio do not exhibit the same static issues. It sounds like the gain is turned up too loud and is trying too hard to overcompensate.

Is anyone else having an issue like this? The dealer hasn't been able to identify any issues at this time.

Thanks.

I have the same car and phone as you, and I do not have this problem....it sounds crystal clear.

Have you tried deleting the phone from the car, deleting handsfree link from the bluetooth list on the phone, restarting the iPhone and car and then re-pairing?

Yes, I have taken all of those steps and it has not improved. This happens on two separate phones, both iPhone 7. When we first received the car it was fine and it started about 1 week into ownership.

Ok got it. Have you tried to reset the network settings? This will erase all your saved wifi and bluetooth connections though.

I believe that I have done that, although I will try again and post the results. Thanks.

2016 RLX-SH HandsFreeLink static

I have had this issue too. It seems random and it gets so bad I can't hear the other party on the phone, yet they don't hear anything. I have a Verizon BlackBerry PRIV with marshmallow android operating system. Usually turning the Bluetooth off on the phone then turning it back on then trying the call again will fix it. I can find no pattern to when it happens, restarting the phone before I get into the car does not garentee that the problem won't happen. I have updated to the 2017 navigation update and it didn't fix the problem. Instead it just introduced an annoying glitch where when I have power distribution selected when I start the car it centers the navigation half of the screen so the car icon is half under the power distribution display so I can't see the navigation screen for where I am going, only places to my left.

As to the navigation screen problem: I updated about 3 weeks ago to the 2017 Brown disk, and it did the same thing. It returned to normal after the update was completed in full (when the little hard drive icon on the top left on the screen went away).

Aside from Map and POI updates, were there any other functional changes or features changed?

I looked over almost everything, but did not notice any changes. I think the interface is a little snappier, but that could be just an illusion.
They also had to send me a new DVD set, because it would not read the original Disk 2. I find it interesting that for some reason they have been out of stock for a while now.....

Yes, I have the same problem.

Are you on AT&T?

I am communicating with people who are trying to help with issues experienced by some people who have the AT&T Intel modem versions of the 7 and 7 Plus.

But...we are up to iOS 10.2.2 and about the fourth different version of modem firmware and it still happens. It is better, but it still happens.

Those of us with this version of 7 and 7 Plus experience reduced cell signal capture for a given dBA, too.

You can have two people standing right next to each other, both on the same array and both at -115 dBA, and the Intel version will fail while the Qualcomm version makes a clear call.

^^^ Just a thought for anyone who uses AT&T and is planning on buying an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus: The unlocked versions from Apple have the Qualcomm modem like the Verizon versions. Especially now that carrier subsidies are pretty much gone, you'll pay the same amount as you would for the phone from AT&T but you will get a better cellular modem. There are clearly reception issues with the AT&T/Intel phone, as George points out above.

If all versions of the 7 and 7 Plus weren't so clearly superior to the next best thing, I think you'd have seen a mass exodus by now.

The Intel modem problem is fairly well known, now, but Apple has been successful with preventing an exodus because all versions of the iPhone are just head and shoulders above the next best thing.

But I'll tell you...I've been very tempted to get the No-SIM version of the 7 Plus, and dumping my AT&T version onto eBay or something.

When you've been dealing with Apple for a long time, anything less than perfection just doesn't cut it.

I have this problem on my 2016 RLX. When I am taking on my iPhone 6S, and the speaker is active (i.e. Bluetooth system speaker is broadcasting the called person's voice) I hear a low-volume midrange background static hissing noise that is annoying. I've deleted and re-added the phone but it stop occurs. My 2010 MDX does not have the same issue. Does anyone have a solution for this?

I have a 2011 RDX and an Iphone 6s and the same thing started happening to me a few weeks ago. At first I thought it was a handsfree link issue but after reading several post think it may be a Iphone issue. I do use AT&T for my service.

I have this problem but it didn't start until the latest iterations of iOS.

If anybody in here had a solution that worked, please let me know before I have to buy those stupid AirPods.

I have the iPhone 7 and the latest iOS installed. It works very well in my 2016 SH, no static at all.

Did you try to reset the network settings on the iPhone, delete it from the SH and the pair again? This has helped me in the past.....

Have you tried to get the iPhone exchanged at the apple store? Maybe I am not having any problems because I have a Verizon iPhone with the Broadcom modem not the Intel one?

Not to revive a dead thread, but did anyone get this issue solved? I just traded in an '08 MDX for a '14 RLX Hybrid, and this issue is driving me nuts. I've tried 2 iPhone 7's (10.3.1 and the previous version) and the static is present whenever the person on the other end speaks, some calls are way worse than others. As a test, I ran the BT volume on the phone itself from the lowest to the highest, didn't change the static, so it's not that. The MDX didn't have this issue, and my '18 RDX doesn't have this issue either (the '18 RDX is perfect, and I thought the hardware was all very similar for the navi/hfl in both of these cars. Wondering if anyone actually had Acura replace any parts to solve this issue.

I am on a version of iOS 11.4, and I do not have the static problem.

My my only problem right now is that HamdsFreeLink is not authorized for precedence, so iMessages go to my watch instead of showing on the screen.

Not or a big deal to me.

It has been a while (a year is a long time in the development of cellular devices!).

But I think that what I decided in the end was that the problem that I was having seemed to be unique to the Intel version of the iPhone 7, and that the Qualcomm version did not seem to exhibit that problem.

Now that we know that Apple wants to sever relationship with Qualcomm, I sure hope they have their acts together and will test everything thoroughly before the Fall 2018 rollout of the next iPhones.

I don't think I can remember having Bluetooth static with the iPhone X, and I was thinking just the other day that it was surprising that Amazon Music over Bluetooth sounded almost as good as Pandora Music over the iPod connection.

I've got an appt. this Thursday for the dealership to have the car all day to determine the issue. I entertained grabbing a new iPhone 8 or X, but I'm not unhappy with my 7 currently (unless it's the culprit in this case).

I'll report back, just in case there are others who ever have this issue.

Is the general consensus to replace the iPhone 7 and go with an 8 or X? (is that when you guys seemed to notice the white noise issue go away?) ... pgeorg, you're not running an iOS beta version too are you?

No I am running 11.3.1, and I am definitely NOT saying to upgrade your iPhone. I had no such problems with my iPhone 7 before I upgraded a few months ago (stated that on my earlier posts).

I think as George was pointing out, it has to do more with the modem manufacturer (AT&T-Verizon). I have Verizon, by the way.

Oh have you tried going to 11.3.1 on your iPhone 7, or is that what you meant to type on your previous post. I believe Apple made some significant changes to their bluetooth software on iOS 11.

'14 RLX Sport Hybrid and iPhone 6S (AT&T version), iPhone 7 (unlocked = Verizon version) and now iPhone X (again unlocked = Verizon version). Never had any static issues. I doubt it's the phone, unless there is a problem with the modem in the AT&T version of the iPhone 7, which I assume we would know by now.

You can still buy a new iPhone 7, but IMHO you should only buy the SIM-Free version, unlocked and guaranteed not to have the modem I am complaining about. :-)

I had this problem with 2015 MDX and iPhone 7 Plus and 8 Plus. Did everything suggested including restoring phone to factory settings. My wife’s iPhone 8 worked fine in my car, but my phone had terrible audio on phone calls only with the BT connection. Finally figured out it was interference from the Tile application on my phone. I turned off the auto refresh function and all was good. Bluetooth interference by the Tile app has been noted for other BT devices.

I don't use Tile, and I'll still have static on a hands free call much of the time.

Glad it worked for you, though.

The calls where we have no static and crystal clear voice, I am noticing that the calls are between two iPhones of recent vintage.

XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max

Those combinations have no static if only one of them is on HandsFreeLink.
