Driver's seat belt is not working (not pulling out)
Hi everyone,
I have a 2016 Acura TLX V6 SH-AWD. Today, all of a sudden, my seat belt (the driver's) is no longer pulling out. I cannot attach my seat belt as it refuses to let go. Also I can hear this motor-like noise from it. What could the problem be? I called the closest Acura dealership and I am supposed to see them on Monday so they can assess it.
I am located in Toronto, Canada. I'm not sure if this under the warranty or not? I live about 15m from the dealership (not the one it was bought from) but I also do not want a ticket for driving without a seat belt fastened! It was in an accident about a year ago and the steering wheel seat belt deployed but all was fixed and the seat belt was working fine until this morning when it decided to no longer pull out. I don't know if there is a fuse or something I can do to make the motor stop and allow me to drive with the seat belt on until it is fixed. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!

In the United States, seat belts have a lifetime warranty. I believe seat belts are covered by the powertrain warranty in Canada. Since the car was previously in an accident, Honda might raise that as a defense to covering it under the warranty.

In the United States, if you go to page 28 of your warranty book, you will see that your seat belts are covered under a limited warranty for 15 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first (it is NOT lifetime). It also states that the seat belt warranty does not cover: “Failure caused by abuse, alteration, accidental damage, misuse, or malfunction resulting from a collision.”
Being in Canada, check your warranty book for seat belt time and mileage warranty for Canada.
If you used an aftermarket repair shop for the prior damage, it is possible they did not use Acura OEM parts, as there are aftermarket seat belts available cheaper.
On the other hand, if Acura repaired the seat belt then there should still be warranty on the seat belt.
Best bet is to take it back to whoever did the repair and complain about it. If you get stopped by the police, just explain that you are taking the vehicle in for the seat belt repairs and show them the malfunctioning seat belt.
Yes, you could have it towed, but then you risk having to pay for the tow should Acura not warranty it.

Well just to post an update: I called my mechanic who fixed it and he changed the seat belt motor and its electronic tensioner free of charge. All is well now, My nearest Acura dealer wanted $150 plus tax just to diagnose it. I thought that was excessive but in the end it has been good. Everything is good now and my TLX is driving great. Thank you all for your advice as I read it all. Will be checking back this site for other things.

Not anymore, depending on what year the car is built it can be lifetime, 15 yrs/ 12 yrs/ 10/yrs, etc. Best to check warranty booklet printed with car manual booklets.
