Wierd paint issue

I noticed that the paint near the rear spoiler is chipped/worn away. This is on the body, not any part of the rear hatch that moves, and is in the recess where the hatch comes into. I watched it open and close and the moving parts never get closer than a quarter of an inch, so it's not rubbing. It may be flexing in that area. The metal showing through is not rusting--so far--it just looks like it's galvanized. I suspect that it wouldn't be under warranty since they would call it a paint issue, but I wonder how widespread this is--if it is indeed due to the design. FYI, it's a 2013 in white that I bought new.
Thanks,
Mike Todd

Why wouldn't it be under warranty?

I can't say for sure. I sold cars at a Honda dealer in the summer of 1996. There was a corrosion warranty of something like 10 years/100,000 miles, but I was also trained that if someone asked about a warranty on the paint, we were supposed to--as bluntly as we wanted--say we warranty the paint until they drive if off the lot. The danger was someone coming in with a door ding asking us to fix it. Now, my issue might suggest a design issue or defect in workmanship, but it's not corrosion as near as I can tell

My 2016 Fathom Blue Pearl has the same issue. It’s getting worse. Dealer quoted me 350$ to repaint it. I contacted Acura Client Relations to suggest they come up with an alternate approach, even willing to split the cost of repair maybe. Nothing touches the area yet the paint chips off and grey “primer” can be seen underneath. It looks like it didn’t quite get painted properly, or was not prepped right. Hopefully I’ll get some help from Acura on this.

When I was looking at used RDXs back in Jan/Feb of this year...without exception, every single one of the half-dozen to ten RDXs I looked at had the paint chipped / peeled in this area. Some were much worse than others. The 13 RDX I wound up buying has the issue...just not as bad as some of the others I looked at.

I received a call back from client relations and they agreed to pay for 75% of the cost to paint the area. I wrote a note to them via the online Client Relations site and attached a photo, spoke with someone there about my issue politely and they stepped part way up. I’m planning to call and get this scheduled soon. Good luck to the rest of you on this.
