Which tire size? 255 40 or 245 45 for example
2012 TSX - Using TL Type S 17" wheels. Was thinking of going with two sets of wheels and throwing winters on these TL wheels but I'm just going to go with a set of all seasons and if I get another set of wheels I throw summer tires on them.
Which size would work/look best on a stock suspension? I like the idea of the extra wheel width with 255's (the rims I have a pretty heavy though). TL owners were reporting 255's with a 40 sidewall, but im wondering if its getting too close to a rubber band looking tire with the very high wheel well gap our TSX's have. I'm afraid it would look silly. Can anyone make a recommendation?

I think I've suggested just buying 18's and using 245/40/18 before.
If you're decided on buying another set of 17's to round out the two sets of 17's you already have...245/45 is slightly smaller than the stock 225/50...and 255/45 is slightly larger than the stock 225/50.
Both are about a 4mm deviation from the stock rolling diameter.

You gave great suggestions. My next wheels will not be 17" - I'm interested in the specific tire size/wall/width for my current 17"s. Now that I have a 8 inch rim I'm wondering if 255's are the way to go.
The stockers I have are not in the best shape. Bought the car with a bit a curb rash and unknown to me two wheels were safe but dented on the inner wheel. I do not plan on putting them on the car until I sell it.

Nominally, a 255 is slightly over 10" wide (255mm).
You would want at least 9 or 9.5" wheels to accomodate them. They will "square out" on a 9.5" wheel.
A 255 will be pinched pretty badly on a 8" wide wheel. So will a 245, for that matter.
Aesthetics aside, in terms of optimizing the tyre...235mm is about the max you'd want on a 8" wide wheel. Even that is a little much.
**referring to tyres in the sidewall heights that pertain to the TSX.

255's are definetly pinched in. I'm not going to go that route, after some research 255 40 will not fit on an 8" rim (45 sidewall would though). I have 225 on there now. The lip of the wheel sticks a little less than 1/8". The sidewalls of the tire are not flush with the rim. The type S came with 235's on them.
235:
245:
255 (this confirms that 255 40 will not work, but a 45 side wall will)
I'm also thinking to try to stay at a 45 sidewall. With the wheel gap, a 40 sidewall will just look silly on a a set of wheels that already look small on the car. I know, I just LOVE the Type S wheels.

Yes, a taller sidewall will make a tyre work at narrower rim widths. Trucks have 265's on 7.5" wheels, for example.
But aesthetically, it will still look pinched. Aesthetics are viewer dependent. I like my tyres to "square out". Though, a pinched tyre is my preference over a stretched tyre.
A 255/45 or 245/45 is within (+/-) 4mm of the stock rolling diameter, as mentioned prior.
255/40 is the incorrect size for a 2G TSX. Your speedometer would be off considerably.

Great points. I believe you have already said 235, but in this scenario would you go with 235/45 or 245/45? I personally like the idea of a slightly wider tire, 235 is a nice jump from 225 regardless.

I'm very happy with 245/45/17. Car drives great and grips fantastic. Haven't had a chance to drive in wet weather yet. Road noise is minimal as well. Went with BF Goodrich geforce comp-2 AS
