Liquid gurgling noise from under the hood after a cold start?

I currently have a 13 SHAWD with 80k miles on it. Purchase it CPO at 11k miles and haven't had any issues with the car. Recently, I have heard some liquid gurgling and "moving" after starting the car and driving a few hundred feet (usually at the stop light in my neighborhood. It's kind of hard to describe but it sounds like liquid is crawling through pipes or something. This lasts about a minute or two and stops and only heard within the first 5 minutes of driving the vehicle. Anyone have any ideas?

Do you have the Air Conditioning on? Is sound like the refrigerant traveling through the tubing and the HVAC doors moving. I would first suggest that your turn your HVAC to full OFF and see if it makes this noise. Let us know.

Hey man! It is the ATF filter! The filter gets clogged overtime time so it does need to be replaced. I got it replaced with a factory filter and no gurgling noise since then.

Thanks SoL, did you replace it yourself? I saw a DIY on the forums but the pictures were all deleted.

Do you know roughly on average how much it is to replace it at the dealer and is it worth it?

Your welcome!
I had the dealer do it since my car was a CPO. That part was not covered under warranty, but since I recently purchased the vehicle they gave me a great deal on replacing it compared to the quotes I received from other dealers.
was it this thread?

Sounds pretty straight forward on install in you work on your own cars.

I can't find the invoice, but it was little over $100 I believe, and other dealers where asking about close to $300. Your car still has warranty until 100k right? Go to the dealer you bought it at.

It is the ATF filter - mine started gurgling then sound like bearing, it was weird. Took it to the dealer they replaced the ATF filter and did transmission service for free. Funny thing is I have a replacement ATF filter on the shelf behind me, I was going to do as standard maintenance at 35k.

There's a TSB for this issue. When I bought my car last year I noticed the gurgling in the first few days I had the car. I printed out the TSB and brought the car back to the dealer and they replaced the filter and did a drain and fill. No charge, though the factory warranty was still in effect.

TSB 14-049 - Gurgle or Chirp from Under Hood at Cold Start-Up
Applies To: 2012-14 TL - ALL with A/T - ALL

Just did it today and you ain't kidding. My forearms are all scrapped up getting those bastards out. Weird thing is I was only able to drain 2 quarts out of my car. Put 2 in and didn't show up on the dipstick. Had to put 3 in before it was spot on.

mine was just in for the transmission flush service at 25k but not sure if they changed the filter at the same time. Is this normal?

Is what normal? That they changed the fluid but not the filter? Yeah, if you didn't have the gurgling sound and didn't bring it up then I doubt the filter was changed. It's not a regular maintenance item like an oil filter.

yes, I was wondering if changing the filter with the fluid was normal. I have it on record last year, while still under factory warranty that it was making a gurgling sound when cold started. Called the tech today and he said bring it in so they can fire it up cold. He said there is one internal filter which would mean dropping the pan that he has never heard of changing.. and another one closer up and toward the firewall. Will have them take a listen and go from there I guess. He mentioned there has been history of this with the TL I believe but not the rdx

If your TL is a 12-14 6AT the filter is external, not internal.

Here's the TSB for the problem:

I have a 2014 RDX, not a TL. I haven’t seen any TSBs for it.

I had this same problem with my '12 TL and had the ATF filter replaced under warranty as they said it was clogged and that fixed the issue with the noise. Mine sounded more like popcorn popping though.

My mistake on posting in the TL forum.. but they did replace the ATF filter for me although out of warranty.. I guess these are a problem all around.
