Networking done wrong

We are shutting down an office and have around 300 machines we need to move, along with a few storage arrays and part of that is mapping out all the network connections.

This is what I arrived to.

NEVER let R&D manage their own shit.....
There is a Cisco 6509 under that mass of wires.

that seems to be the running comment from this picture.

it is a disaster to trace out, as there are cables looped around others and some that are so freakin tight that they come out of the switch and make a 90 degree turn.

Thanks that just makes me feel soooo much better...

we have actually started pulling connections just to see who complains...

Oh yea, we have punch downs with no labels, so we have NO IDEA where they go to...

I mean, that's sort of a great way to trace them, just pull one, wait for a call

nope some of them had port labels in the switch config, but that might be 1% of the ports
Will do the recableing at the new office and everything will be done right as we are now managing this crap, not R&D

Meh, it ain't pretty, but I've seen far worse on the Redditt Cable Fail forum...

I've seen a few probably about as bad as that in person, but I've never had to be the one to fix it

And I sure don't remember ever seeing a 6509 still in use. EOL for that thing was at least 5 years ago...

I have too on reddit, but this is one I have to work on personally. and that is the one thing about the Ciscos, they are rock solid. and when we move to the new location we are getting new switches.

You didn't at least upgrade the network equipment while moving?

God no.

you only upgrade switches when there is a feature that you need or are correcting a bug that you hit.
Network/SAN/infiniband all the same. if it is working DO NOT TOUCH.

We have switches that have been up for 8 years.

Please come tell that to our telecomm guys. They have decided we replace everything on a 4-5 year cycle. If it is just newer of the same hardware.

In some of our plants we only just finished replacing all our old Nortel 100mb switches like 2yrs ago. You had to like try and kill those things. They were amazing besides the network speeds.

We used to only do end point to end point fiber connections in our data center and I hate it. I am in the process of slowly redesigning our data center to get away from that and run end of row and fdps and patch panels for between row jumps.

Slowly been redesigns all our telco closets as well over the years. Things were a bad mess. Only seen 1 or 2 like the one posted though thankfully.

Good deal. So hard sometimes to get management to by in to doing it the right way for the future when it isn't getting them anything Right Now!

Our datacenter is so small doing a core fiber location didn't make sense. We only have 3 rows of 8 cabinets. That is why we just did end of row cabinets instead but with everything overhead finally. Hardware for the first two rows has been showing up. Should have those two done by years end so we can start moving equipment from the last row to the other two 1 at a time to get the final row done. Converting an active datacenter with only two days a year to take down whatever you want takes time. I think it will take us 1.5 - 2 years to finish the transition sadly.

My last place did home runs of fiber all over the place, in the ladders, under the floor, between racks, what a mess

Yeah it is terrible. We are down to only two under floor fibers but no sure they are ever going anywhere.
