It's a low price for now. I looked elsewhere and couldn't find them cheaper. The rate these drives are dropping in price I'm sure they could be had for $69 regularly and possibly $59 in about 6mo to a 1yr when 3TB drives are more readily available.

3TB drives are going to be GPT only drives since there's 32bit limit on 2TB MBR drives. So with 3TB+ drives you not only have to worry the new advanced format 4k sector you also have to remember they can only be GPT formatted.
These are the two big changes going on in hard drives right now.

after dealing with some router issues today, I'm back on to copying stuff off of the NAS so that I can install the new drives. Dunno how long it's gonna take to transfer the 1TB worth of data over to my iMac though.

basically the two technologies that are the foundation of hard drives for the past 30 years have reached their limit and we got to start using the new versions to have larger drives. GPT is replacing MBR for 2.2TB and larger drives and 4k sectors are replacing 512b sectors.

Update:
Did a factory default on the NV earlier this evening so that the block size utilized is updated to improve performance. I purchased this unit prior to the rollout of the 4.x firmware which included support for larger hard drives. In order to improve performance you have to perform a factory default if you started out with the 3.x firmware. This required a resync of the entire volume which took a few hours. So now I'm going through the process of replacing each drive, one by one. I'd replace them all, but I want to test them one at a time to ensure that they drives work since they aren't listed on the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). The NV is reporting that it needs 17 hours and 39 minutes to initialize the drive and perform a resync.
Guess I'll report back tomorrow with the outcome of the first drive.

Disk initialization started. The estimated time of completion is 17 hour(s) and 39 minute(s), at which time you will be notified via email. You can also check the progress in Frontview in the Volumes -> RAID Settings tab. Please do not shutdown the system while the initialization is in progress.

Just received an email alert from my NAS stating it was able to complete the initialization and resync using the new drive. It didn't need as long as it originally stated to initialize and sync probably cuz there was no data to sync.
This is a very good sign. After I get home tonight I'll begin installing the remaining three drives and by Thursday should have all of them installed and synced.
Keeping my fingers crossed that they all work.

So being the impatient person that I am, and because I don't have any data whatsoever on my NAS, i'm thinking about replacing the remaining 3 drives at the same time so I don't have to wait till Thursday if I were to replace them one at a time.
Any of you replaced multiple drives at the same time? I've already done the factory reset and am running the latest firmware. My thoughts are that it will simply initialize all of the discs and sync everything once rather than resyncing multiple times.

If you have zero data on there, it's just building a file/cluster structure. Go for it. Worst comes to worst, you have to go back and re-do it one at a time.

So after posting on the readynas board got word that you can simply replace all the drives so I went ahead and did it and performed yet another factory reset.
The Volume is being created as we speak, don't know how long it's gonna take though. My guess is, sometime tomorrow it'll be done at which time I'll have somewhere between 5-5.5 TB of usable space.

I would find a single 1GB file and back it up 5-6 thousand times.

So if all goes according to plan, I'm only going to have 2TB of space that can allocated for time machine backups.
I was hoping to be able to have enough space to use time machine on my MBP and iMac. Even though my iMac has a 2TB hard drive, I don't plan on ever going over 1TB of space on my iMac let alone 500GB so it shouldn't be an issue, but still.
Now I want a 6 Bay ReadyNAS. At least if I ever upgrade I could swap these drives in.

What are you using to backup the NAS or are you just using the NAS to backup your computers?

I use it as a central storage location primarily. Prior to the upgrade, I was using it as a Time Machine backup drive for my MBP as well, but needed extra space so that I could do Time Machine backups of my iMac. The issue with FrontView is that the Time Machine feature only allows you to allocate a percentage of the total usable space to Time Machine, which is retarded if you ask me. It would be nice if they gave you the ability to dedicate all of the space, if you wanted, to be for Time Machine.

Do you know of any software that can do an analysis on a folder and show you visually which folders/files are using up the most space?

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
JDiskReport is Java and runs is multi-platform: http://jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/
I'm happy with du -h
I really like that the ReadyNAS NV+ runs Linux.

Anyone have experience with Synology NAS? They seem to get good reviews, with the exception that their support sucks. The company is based in Taiwan but has a U.S. division. I suspect the support is coming out of Taiwan.
I'm looking at the DS411+ and the DS410.
A couple of nice features are that they support backup to Amazon S3, can be iscsi target, and they support IP surveillance cameras. The prices of these units seem inline with the ReadyNAS+ and ReadyNAS Ultra 4.
They have a demo of the UI here

One correction, I am looking at the DS411J and DS410.

So I went with the DS411J and a couple of 2TB drives. I also got an Apple TV that I plan to jailbreak and put XBMC on. I'm going to use the NAS to store Time Machine backups, iTunes Server, and a spot to stick ripped DVDs.

I've only ripped a small amount and uncompressed with all content they are around 7-8GB so I figure I'll be able to store around 120 per TB.
