Good call! I grabbed Mavericks last night when I got home from work.

So far so good. I only had a few minutes to play around with it though.

Some useful info I guess.... Download from the App store and before you install, copy the mavericks install app (in applications) to a USB stick to install on other Macs. I did a few that way today. Do you updates and get the Ilife and IWork apps.

I thought the iLife and iWork apps were only for new purchases?

Alright, I was going to wait a little bit, but most seem very happy with the upgrade. I'm in the process now...

Ok, I'm confused, are you referring to getting the iLife and iWork apps for free after you install Mavericks? Every time I check the app store, iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, are all for purchase, not listed as free.

You get it when you buy a new computer or iPhone 5s.

I'm not really sure myself. I got them for free because I got a 5s and you register your serial for it and it gives them to you. Maybe I'm wrong on this.

That's what I heard as well. The way Whiskers made it sound is that anyone who updates to Mavericks gets it. I was about to go beat up an apple genius dude and ask for my redeem codez!

I'm contemplating merging the iDevices threads into one, but that'll get ugly because of how many posts are in the iPhone thread and how many are in the iPad thread. There is so much overlap between the two especially when it comes to talk about iOS that isn't hardware specific. Oh well, it's ok the way it is for now until we can come up with something better.

Don't know if you guys heard about this or not, but within the Activity Monitor you can now track which apps are consuming the most juice....

this comes to iOS

Just wanted to point out something that may affect your computers as well. I noticed that my computer had this process running called CIJScannerRegister that is used to find Canon Printers. I don't have a Canon printer, probably never will, but yet this process was always running. This little app unnecessarily sends out packets of data through your network, eating up precious GBs

So found this handy tutorial to nuke it, it also talks about what this process is:

http://www.gcsdstaff.org/roodhouse/?p=3016

PS. you may have noticed this process running in my previous screenshot. Was doing some checking on my computer to ensure it was running efficiently when I found the little sucker.

ohh this is awesome thanks!!

I haven't had much time to play with it yet, but one thing i noticed right away is that it fixed the way my computer would sleep. Lately if I had chrome open and i put the computer to sleep (without closing the lid) the screen would be on for almost 30 seconds before it goes off. Now its instant again.

Do you have to enable app nap?

Mine was running pretty damn slow last night...but I was running Lightroom 5, CS6, Chrome and a trial version of Photomatrix Essentials...

Made some updates to my network at home so that I can move my NAS to my office and interact with it via a Gb connection so that I can get my TM backups going again with it among other reasons. Previously I was using a 2TB Seagate External hard drive via FW800 for TM.

After I got everything setup for my NAS to be used as a Time Machine backup drive, I found out that you can set multiple time machine backup drives for the same computer!

Now I've got one time machine backup going to my NAS and another to my 2TB Seagate drive.

Learned of this here: http://www.maclife.com/article/howto...iple_locations

So most of us are all familiar with the symbols that denote the special apple keys like the one shown on the left of the attached image.

Does anyone know what the symbol on the right denotes? The symbol for the control key doesn't have the horizontal bar, so it's not for the control key. Reason why I'm trying to sort this out is because I'm trying to find the symbol, if it exists, that represents the FN key.

Found my answer here and a lot more:

http://macbiblioblog.blogspot.com/20...y-symbols.html

That symbol is for the enter key.

Although I did join their forums today, I did not find the answer on their site. I found it via Google. I've been hunting for an answer to this for a day now, but because 90% of the searches tended to be about how to create symbols with an apple keyboard, it made it hard to find the answer.

I found other posters on their site asking about similar information regarding Apple's use of symbols, so I shared my findings with them.

I saw some other legends like that, guess I must have missed the 'enter' key symbol.

So now that I have my new rMBP, I want to resell my old MBP on eBay. I'd like to secure erase the drive and put Mavericks on there but not have mavericks tied to my Apple ID. Is that possible? Seems like I'd have to go back to Snow Leopard since 10.7-10.9 require you to enter your Apple ID before starting the install.

Though if I enter my Apple ID pre-install does it transfer over post install? Or I could sell it with no OS and have the internet recovery partition there so they can install it themselves. Though they'd have to have already downloaded mavericks on another Mac otherwise they're SOL. Does Mavericks require entering your Apple ID pre-install like 10.7. and 10.8 do?

I'm just thinking out loud here...

Now I'm off to install W8 via USB drive so that I can immediately upgrade to 8.1, because I can't install 8.1 directly with my W8 Key...

How about this for the install:

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2013/10...s-x-mavericks/

If the above does in fact sound legit, which I think it is, then before you do the install, put the MBP in target disk mode, do the secure wipe, then do the reinstall.

Good luck. Those system wipes to clean the hard drive take a bit of time. Do the 31 pass for shits and giggles.
