We’ve been talking about the possibilities of a Nintendo 64 Classic for some time, a piece of hardware that’s been hinted at since the success of both the NES Classic and SNES Classic Edition systems. But now it appears that Nintendo is ready to move forward on it -- and possibly sooner than anyone thinks.
A new European trademark has been revealed, suggesting that, yes, the Nintendo 64 Classic is finally in the works. And you can see from the trademark that it points towards that particular console, mainly because of the controller image that’s included. As you can see, that’s a Nintendo 64 controller, right down to the placement of buttons and analog stick.
But here’s what’s interesting. Nintendo could be moving forward with launching this in time for the holiday season, putting it in contention with the just-announced PlayStation Classic. That means that, for the first time in over two decades, the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 would be butting heads on the market once again.
This report comes from Business Insider, which suggests that the system could arrive this December, right alongside its Sony competitor. “Hilariously, this would be a perfect throwback to the original showdown between the PlayStation 1 and Nintendo 64 back in the mid-90’s,” they noted.
Of course, Nintendo hasn’t said a word, but an early October announcement for a release in December would certainly be timely. Now the real question is what games it would included. Goldeneye 007, as much of a Nintendo 64 classic as it is, may likely get left out to licensing issues, possibly replaced by Perfect Dark instead.
But there are tons of other games to consider, like Wave Race 64, Super Mario 64, F-Zero X, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, and countless others. So that void would easily be filled, and Nintendo could find around two dozen different titles to be included with the hardware, going for a reasonable price of $99. (Or maybe $89, just to get the jump on Sony?)
We’ll see what gets announced over the next few weeks, but don’t be surprised if Nintendo makes an announcement out of nowhere and goes for a one-two punch for the holiday season, between this and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Now that’d be a Christmas season we would love to see.

meh...They released the classic, its cool, I like it, my kids love it....but then they put almost all of those games on the switch's online plan (which I currently dont have) but its like...ok another dick move.
I dont care if they come out with a n64 classic so long as they release games on the switch via the subscription. Id much rather play on the switch's portable format anyway.

If we’re being honest, people aren’t buying classic consoles for the game selection.
Replica systems are adorable. They’re a great conversation piece. They bring back fond memories of yesteryear, like Grandma’s cookies. It’s the hardware that is driving sales, not the games themselves.

If the NES classic came with 20-30 of Nintendo's worst games, I doubt it would've sold as well.
Maybe Nintendo's not releasing a N64 classic until they clear out all/most of the NES classics from their warehouses first? They're still in stock every where.

Do you have plans for doing another classic console in the future? Do you expect to release any more games on the classic consoles that have already been released?
There’s no ability for add-on content with our classic consoles, so when you purchase the console it’s coming with that set roster of content. We worked very hard, both for the NES Classic and the SNES Classic, to really have the best games that defined that generation. We’ve said that the current systems are the extent of our classic program. We’ve also been clear that, at least from an Americas perspective, these products are going to be available through the holiday season and once they sell out, they’re gone. And that’s it. The way that consumers will be able to continue participating with our classic content is going to be through Nintendo Switch Online, and we just released three new games (Ninja Gaiden, Wario's Woods and Adventures of Lolo) from the NES generation onto that platform. We look at that as the main way that consumers will be able to experience that legacy content.

As long as they add on the Switch I’m cool. In fact had I known they were going to essentially release the classic on the switch I would have never bought one.
