DIY: Parking lights and Fog lights

DIY: Parking lights and Fog lights
I've seen post about parking lights a lot but never paid much attention to it until today.
I have to say it was the cheapest mod ever and worth every penny :-)
I've found many threads are very long with comments going back and forth so here's my summary on how I've taken the task.
1) Remove the two screws under the the dash below the steering wheel which opens the cover.
2) Pull the cover to release 2 tabs on the top left and 1 tab on the top right.
3) Find the 3 bundle of wires, There are one bundle thats half exposed and half covered. For my 1998, 3.2 It was the bottom bundle. This bundle will have a bunch of red and other color wires.
4) Locate the RED wire with BLUE stripes meaning the RED wire has MORE RED than BLUE.
(There are couple of red and blue wires so look for the RED with thin blue strips and not the other way around)
5) Locate the RED wire with SILVER dots meaning the RED wire has MORE RED than the SILVER dots.
(Both of the wires in 4 & 5 are in the same bundle)
6) Test each wires if you can by connecting them to a 12v test lead w/ bulb (purchased at any auto parts store) to Ground and turn on the parking lights/head lights.
(One of the wire is ON/CLOSED when the headlights turn on, the other is ON/CLOSED when the parking lights are on)
7) I've used a 5 Amp Connector with wires to Crimp the (4)RED/BLUE and (5)RED/SILVER wires together. Yes together.
Now the Fog Lights will turn on when the Parking lights are on.
I'd like to Thank UNX979 and 96TL for their prior post that helped me with this task.
It was pretty easy for me but it seems easy is relative for this mod according to the prior threads. I hope the above sumary helps the next person.

... By "them" I mean the red wire with the blue stripe and the Red wire with silver dots. They are both in the same bundle so you can't miss it.

correct me if Im wrong but once one does this mod, your fog light on/off switch becomes useless, and you can only turn them on and off along with the parking lights....ie, if your headlights are on, your fogs must also be on.

Hey Mola, how long did it take you? Your welcome BTW.
It took me less than 10 minutes for the task.
Locating the wires were pretty easy going off your comment.
I have to say a good flash light is needed to identify the colors. I had two with me so that helped.
Since I found the wires in less than a minute I wasn't very positive if those were the correct wires.
Testing each lead took the longest since I didn't want to blow anything incase I didn't have the correct wires.
The actual mod took a little over 5 minutes but I sat there and played with the lights before putting the panel back on so about 10 minutes or less.

I dont think you should cut those wires.
I dont see what advantage you get by doing it that way.
It cost me $5 for the fuse/wire leads and $3 for the crimps.
It's not an earthshattering amount to spend for a mod.
I can think of couple of reasons on why not to cut them but I dont think anyone here knows which wire to cut and which ends to use here since most bridged them together. So you could try it and share with us on your findings.
If you cut both and tie them, it wont work at all... since one of the wires needs to stay intact for the parking light voltage to power the fogs and lights.
The fog lead receives voltage when the head lamp is on but not when the parking lamp is on.
Other lead receives voltage when the parking lamps and/or head lamps are on.
The voltage from the parking lamps will power the other lead so you'll have to find the parking lamp voltage lead and keep that in tact, then snip the other wire and find which of the two ends will do the trick.
In Theory it will work if you snip just one of the two wire but you'll need to test the wires to figure out which one to snip and which end to use. To test without cutting, you'll need to do what I did to add the wire anyway. So why not just bridge them together which is now faster than cutting one and testing them.
With this aside, this is speaking without knowing if cutting a lead doesn't not effect anything else. if the lead is powering anything else on the car, then you'll end up connecting it back to get whatever stopped working.
I'd stay away from cutting.

so would i connect the fuse wire connector to which wire or it doesnt matter..? I know that the the red w/ thin blue line is for the fog and the red w/ silver dot is the parking light. I connected both of these wire w/o the fuse, thinking that it should still power the fog light when i turn on the parking light but it didnt turn on with it.

hmm...
I know this might be off topic, but Im trying to install JDM headlights on my 96 2.5 and on the signal light (or one of the lights...I can't remember), the connector has 3 wires rather than the 2 on the US model headlights...I figured that maybe I can use the same clamps to join one of the wires reducing the JDM wires to 2...does anyone understand what I'm sayin? I dont have the headlights with me...so sorry that I'm sounding like a retard...but can someone help please???

just did it on my 96 3.2 I tapped the different though. It too me a while to find the wires because there were silver dots on all of the wires. haha So i cut the red/ sliver dot one, capped the end that goes up to the steering wheel off, then I tapped the other side into a wire that gets power with IGN II on on the climate control wire bundle. Now what do I have? daytime running fogs that comes on whenever the key is on IGN II and is still operated by the switch. The green part of the switch lights up when its on and the white part of the switch comes on with the headlights still.

I HAVE TO REDO MINE BECAUSE I USED A WIRE TO CONNECT THEM TOGETHER OTHER THAN THAT IT STILL WORKS GOOD WITH NO PROBLEMS OF USING A WIRE,INSTEAD A WIRE TAP.
MY BAD ITS RED/BLUE AND RED/SILVER DOTS

Anyone have any issues after doing this correctly? I mean, has anyone experienced warm wires, car fires, circuit shorts? If not.. I'm gonna roll by radio shack and make this happen soon.
