Greetings All,
The car has about 22k miles on the factory Pirelli summer tires which are about toast. (Disclaimer: I bought the car with 17K on it and have no idea how it was driven before me) I have looked through the threads and most people look for Winter tires but haven't seen a lot of threads about new summer tires or switching to all seasons. I live in AZ and I don't plan on taking it in snow but do have about 6 days of rain a year I don't know about switching to all season since Arizona is pretty summer like all year round but really don't like the idea of most summer tires not having any sort of warranty.
So my question is two fold:
Has anyone switched to a good summer tire with a warranty? (Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental all have at least 30k miles)
&
Has anyone run any wider tire than the factory? 265, 275, or other?
I have the all season Pirelli's on mine from the factory. I always look ahead at replacement tires. I use Tire Rack to get information and they have never let me down. I am targeting (way before replacement) Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus Ultra high performance all season tires same size as stock.
In the max performance summer category Tire Rack as 2 with 30k+ warranty Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02. Your choices look good to me.
So if you didn't know Discount Tire acquired TireRack a few years ago. There was a closeout sale on Continental Extreme Contact Sports....(the older ones) for $210/tire. In the 275/35/20 size. I just ordered them. The guy at Discount said they are the widest tires that are still in scope to fit the car. So I am getting them installed and out the door for $1085.00 and they come with a 30k mile warranty.
Also according to https://www.wheel-size.com/calc/?whe...cl=50mm&sr=0mm , they should be good to go as well. Looking forward to seeing a little fatter meat on the rims and in the wheel wells. Ill post here upon install!
With your setup do you have wheel spacers installed as well with the Tein springs?
I don't have spacers on mine as of yet but that could be an option to bring the setup out just a touch more.
As far as speedo, I don't really notice anything out of whack but honestly haven't tested it either.
Regarding driving impressions, I do notice the width difference and it feels more planted. The steering feels a bit heavier as well but think it is more than acceptable given how heavy this car is to begin with.
Main thing about tire size changes is the circumference to ensure your braking and speedo work properly. Rule of thumb is to keep it under 3% change. 265 and 275 width will increase the rotating circumference by about 1-2%, see calculations below:
When you go with wider tires and stick with the same size rim, you can run into the issue of sidewall flex. This can make the steering feel lazy when off center or make the steering feel a bit numb. Plus side is better curb protection and some added traction.
I went to 255's on my 13TL from 245 and immediately noticed the change in how the steering was, less precise and a bit lazy. Next time around I went back to 245's and have been happy since. These were with Conti DW tires.
