Your car data increasing your premium!

I recently switched insurance companies and you know how they give you a discount for tracking you through the mobile app? Nearly every other trip includes some sort of "event" and that typically is identified as "Hard braking" (by the standards of the app). I'm not looking forward to this as a premium increase justification!
I made this observation nearly 2 years ago, and it seems like the following article is basically confirming what we are suspecting all along (even if permission has not been given!):

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/11/t...hare&sgrp=c-cb

Aside from inflation, has anyone gotten hefty premium increases in recent memory that may or may not have coincided with sharing your car's data w/insurance?

With such a young driver, it may not be advantageous to allow voluntary tracking despite the promised "discount"!

Interesting read. I have not had any unexpected insurance increases in years.

Fortunately, I don't own a GM vehicle with OnStar.

From my recent experience, it was surprisingly cheaper to have my teenage driver on her own GEICO policy with her mom than to have her added to our family AllState plan.

Makes zero sense I know.

Same here. My daughter and son are 4 years apart. It was cheaper to get them both on Geico than the insurer we had. My daughter is on her own now and still has that policy.

Did either of your kids opt for the voluntary tracking for a discount or no?

I've known about the dongles and apps tracking data. Progressive advertises it a lot in their commercials. There were also articles in the past few years about how cops were taking data stored in the car ECU after an accident. I wasn't aware that data could be shared without consent. I did the online data request from the link in the article. I have my phone paired to the car, but not the acuralink app - because of exactly this situation. But, like onstar, can the car communicate bidirectionally without the app or house wifi?

Bonus that everyone should look at: my state has an opt out option at the bottom of the form. You can just stop them from selling your data (theoretically)

With all discounts, tracking, driver ed, ect, Geico was still considerably cheaper for similar coverage.

Just because you don't pay for services like Onstar doesn't mean 2-way communication doesn't exist! Data is big money!

I suggest everyone get their own reports via the links in the NYT article.

Well they don’t have to actually pay the “Gecko” any fees for the commercials . LOL!!!

I should have been more clear in my question: without the acuralink app can (or does) the TLX send data? I did the opt out on the data site while requesting my report, but that comes in snail mail. I also did the opt out with Acura/Honda. But I'd like to know if the car is still transmitting data even if they're not technically allowed to use it. I also have sporty car made by GM with onstar so it'll be interesting to see if anything shows up for that. Its only purpose is to hoon around in it.

That's a good question since insurances need the app on your phone to differentiate you from another driver!

I read the same article (the NYT link provided by ELIN) a couple days ago, and it got my full attention because I had just set up the "AcuraLink" service and app for my new TLX. Looking at the setup options for this system, I have set "Driver Feedback - save your trip history and get rewarded for good driving habits" to "inactive."

I did that back in 2022. That option remained to activate, until recently. It just isn't there now. I went to the Data Privacy Notice and it says they now collect that type of data. It may time for Honda to lose a lot of money from AcuraLink subscriptions.

Haven't searched further, but saw somebody post on Reddit that Honda/Acura agreed to stop sharing this data as of May 2024: https://www.reddit.com/r/Acura/comme...mdx_data_link/

Edit: Found a better link with a screenshot confirmation from Acura: https://www.reddit.com/r/Acura/comme..._in_acuralink/

Companies are starting to realize that gathering all this personal data creates quite a bit of liability once the inevitable breach happens!

I have a different take. If they remove the ability to opt-out (not sign up for) and have this:

At this weblink: https://www.honda.com/privacy/connec...privacy-notice
To me it indicates they are collecting that data, and selling it for $0.63 per person (don't recall where I read this) to whomever.
You guys may be right and I may be wrong, but I need to know conclusively they are not collecting and selling. There was a thread on here where someone was tracking their Type S, I wouldn't want that data sold.

Unhappy Spousal liability coverage in NYS

Just found out, that I'm being charged for Spousal liability Insurance!
Without informing me, my auto policy INCREASED $100/yearly
What's insane, is that my Wife doesn't drive!
If I get in an accident, with her in the car, she can SUE ME! lol
I DELETED that nonsense IMMEDIATELY
It's NOT mandatory

The latest policy is below.

https://www.honda.com/privacy/privacy-notice

Their only permission to send data to insurance companies is the driver behavior feature. If they are stopping that program, then I don't think they're sharing with insurance any more.
