Some families own 2-3 different kinds of cars.
The problem is that the other brands all sell theirs cars globally, so even if coupes make up a small percentage of sales, the absolute numbers are still large enough to spread the fixed costs over. With Acura pretty much only being in North America, even if the take rate for a coupe version of the TLX was 20% (very optimistic IMO), that's what, 5000 sales total annually? That's tiny. It's half of what Ferrari sells each year.

There's plenty of other gaps in Acura's lineup that they need to fill first. Most pressing is subcompact CUV, but as I've said before, Honda really doesn't have anything that Acura can piggy back off of. Yeah, I know the HRV exists, as does the Acura CDX in China, but that car stinks worse than the ILX when it comes to being a premium/luxury car. It's just not fit (pun intended) to serve as the platform for a proper premium/luxury subcompact crossover.

I hope I got my numbers right Still impressive as I mentioned before that the new TLX costs much more than the previous gen with smaller engine, which people used to opt in.
I highly doubt a sales drop of that amount with same model unless there was some major shortage of line items(s) on the BOM.

+1 This, it's probably lack of some electronic component(s) (ECU/PCBA/......) being chip related that are that are causing the TLX sales drop until some PR statement we're all just speculating.

As for car sales (non-light truck), this graph shows the overall problem facing sedans
Damn, even mid 2010 numbers are approximately the same as early 60's.

The new Nissan Z looks promising for those seeking a two-seat roadster. 400hp starting at $40,000 is phenomenal! I can’t recall many cars that are $1000/hp.

I thought you would just go buy the highest-trimmed Honda one. Or just get a RDX. Once you fit 4-5 people in there and their things or luggage ... RDX is filled-up.

I see a lot of XC40s, Q3s, X1s, and GLAs so there's definitely a market for subcompact CUVs, especially in cities.

Acura is hit badly by the ship shortage. Dealers are empty in Canada.

21 NSXs sold and only 1 RLX sold I’m presuming these are new models.

i wonder what dealer had a 2020 RLX brand new no-miles to sale in 2022

Don't think the numbers mean much they mostly are about who has chip access & who doesn't. Euro sales will tank with the ship sinking & the Ukraine wire harness factory in harms way causing the car factories to start shutting down yesterday. Expect other suppliers in other parts of the world can be used but it will cost lost sales in the meantime.

If the NSX are from the last batch to be built I think the "sales" might be just recording deliveries. IIRC the remaining cars are all pre-sold.

If I would have come across a new 20 RLX SH, I probably wouldn’t have my A-Spec today.

Relative to other brands, a good month for the TLX.

Nice to see that rebound. I wonder though how many are picking up the TLX due to lack of choice, which would be an unfortunate reason to buy a car. I hope at least most in that position find the TLX to be a good car for them though.

The dealership I got my TLX from has had very few TLXes on the lot since I got mine in September last year (many times having none when I checked out of curiosity), but their stock rebounded in the last month or two where they at least have 2 or 3 more consistently. Whatever they do get appears to sell pretty quickly though.

I've started to see more TLXes on the road too, so the results of those sales are showing on the roads. I really like seeing more of them on the road as the car's styling really does stand out in a good way (I'm biased, of course)!

Relative to other brands, a good month for the TLX.
It's funny since according to much of the internet (including comments on sites like Youtube) the G70 is the best car in its class (dethroning the "overpriced" 3-series) and has probably gotten more positive media/social media coverage than any other car in its class, yet US sales have been very lackluster. Even before the supply shortage the TLX has outsold the G70 2:1 or 3:1. Same deal with the Stinger, which has been rumored to be discontinued in a year or so. Just goes to show that hype only matters so much. When consumers actually go out car shopping and have to spend money out of their own pocket it's a different story altogether. Somehow being a couple of a tenths of a second faster on a dragstrip is a lot less relevant...

Agreed. I would even argue that most Type S buyers are cross-shopping with the Lexus IS350 F-sport, as they are nearly identical in price with the IS350 being a little more expensive when optioned with adaptive dampers.

I have been saying the same for months!

Genesis brand in general, the marketing, positive reviews and media coverage that they get should outsell all brands. But yet, they are not even close. If you check GV70 and GV80 sales numbers which are priced the same as RDX and MDX, there is no comparison. Once again, I am saying this out loud, it's easy to be keyboard warrior and come here and preach people to buy G70 but very few will write a check for $60-$70K for a Genesis.

Is Genesis bad? Not at all. I think they are doing extremely well, but they don't have history and they need time....

...on that note, saw my first Stinger AND a G70 in about two weeks just this morning. Both are still such rare sights here in central NJ, particularly as there is a sea of their competitors here.

I don't see Stingers at all, except at the dealer lot. But i start seeing more and more G70s and Gv70s. Both look great and definitely stands out. But tough to stand against well established brands.

Updated with the Mercedes C-class (which was dramatically affected by the chip shortage), Volvo S60, and the discontinued Jaguar XE...

I highly doubt anyone can provide you the exact number. But based on my information, it's about 15%. Could be higher but 15% is for sure. So if Acura sold 6,000 units, about 900 units were TYPE S. The feedback and sale numbers of MDX TYPE S has surpassed the expectation of Honda and Acura.

Not sure this is any indication of success/failure but a local Acura store (not the one I patronize) has 10 MDX Type S that they’re selling for MSRP….this a stealership that’s usually pretty cavalier when it comes to ADM. (They had the TLX Type S marked up $10k.).

My local dealership has 6 Type S models sitting on their lot right now. When I first checked they were asking for $10K over MSRP, but I got an email a couple days ago letting me know they’re “only” $5K over sticker now. This is the same dealership that wouldn’t let people even sit in their demo TLX Type S so I hope nobody buys these from them… Their regular MDX’s are all spoken for as soon as they’re off the truck even with a $5K markup. Makes me think people aren’t exactly lining up for the Type S; I’ve yet to see one in the wild, TLX or MDX for that matter.

Just checked the dealer I got my RDX from and they have 9. 7 Tech and 2 Advance. Only 1 TLX-S though. They wanted stupid mark-ups for the TLX-S when it was launched, so I'm sure they're doing the same with the MDX-S.

Hopefully not ... and for those interested, hopefully that means in a year or so, discounts can be had on them. It's not a bad vehicle per se, I just don't think it's worth the price tag. I will say, the front end has grown on me. Hated it when it was first revealed.

The Advance Type S that I test drove several weeks ago is still available for sale; looks like they have 6 Type S (2 Adv, 4 Tech) in inventory. Honestly, I enjoyed the test drive but the features that stand out to me the most are the massaging seats, fantastic braking and an over the top ELS Studio 3D system.

yeah the MDX-S cars I spoke of have been on the lots for a few weeks now. Seems like everyone isn’t quick to spend $72k+ on an Acura which is good so dealers can start discounting them

Based on my quick look at the Acura website for MDX Type S at dealerships in New York and New Jersey I would believe that if not now there will be deals to have on these vehicles soon as there are many at each of these dealers and some have been sitting for awhile:

Park Avenue (NJ) 10 Advance 20 Tech
Rallye (NY) 12 Advance 9 Tech
Open Road Wayne (NJ) 18 Advance 16 Tech
Paragon (NY) 11 Advance 20 Tech
DCH Montclair (NJ) Advance 10 Tech 14
Springfield (NJ) 8 Advance 15 Tech

Acura might have overestimated the market for them as well.

This is rarefied air for Acura. Customers buying cars that are $70K+ are vastly different from those buying cars in the $30-$50K range that Acura is used to operating in. Aside from the handful of Land Cruiser (RIP) and LX or LS buyers, flagship luxury car buyers don't really care all that much about long-term reliability nor value, which is Acura's perceived strong suit. The lease share for luxury cars is substantially higher, so reliability is a non-issue, and when we're talking about the difference in monthly payments for cars that go for $70K vs $80K or $90K, it's largely inconsequential. The MDX Type S does fill a gap in the market where there isn't anything quite like it...but sometimes there's a reason there's a gap there.

Acura is putting all their effort towards RDX and MDX. These are best selling vehicles and the demand is insane. Anyone thinking that Acura MDX and MDX- TYPE S are on dealers lots are not selling has no clue.. Acura is delivering these cars to dealers as they sell well. Last month Acura sold 10,000 units of MDX and RDX combined.

The TYPE S is exceeded the expectation of Acura and Honda as I mentioned before. The profit margin is super high on MDX TYPE S.

It's a "hot new" model on an already popular car. But, it does appear that demand is waning, at least in certain parts of the US. I can't speak for CA. And it's a good thing that profit margin is "super high" ... as that gives prospective future customers a lot of wiggle room to negotiate with when the time comes.

Well, the same 6 Type S are still sitting on my local dealership's lot for the past month. Not quite sure how they can be selling if they're still there...or are you suggesting the buyers are buying them but just aren't taking them home?

Why they're not selling (ADMs) is irrelevant; the fact is that the ones in my area are not selling. Maybe it's different in Canada, but around here I see a decent amount of 4G MDX and have yet to see a single MDX Type S.
