is a 40/45 series tires on a 20 inch rim possible without rubbing

I'm interested in putting 20 inch wheels on my 2015 TLX Advance (front-wheel drive, no SH-AWD) but I do not like the 35 series tires that are recommended with most wheel and tire packages I see on the web. Can a 40 or 45 series tire (I'm not too hung up on what the width has to be) fit comfortable on a stock TLX without any rubbing issues? Does anyone have any experience with that or can comment on whether or not this will work?

the proper way of fitting tires is to check out a tire calculator.
you want the tires to remain the same rolling diameter as stock. this is important because it keeps the tire to wheel ratio, correct...and will keep your speedometer from straying too fast or too slow..
my favorite tire calculator is Tire Size Calculator - Tire & Wheel Plus Sizing
now, I believe your TLX is the six cylinder with the 225/50/18s...

i quickly input some tire sizes, but they all seemed 10% too tall with the 40 and 45 profile height....which is NO GOOD.
it will look UGLY as hell and your speedometer will be off, BIG time.

you need to play with the calculator to figure out tire sizes

Ironically, I stumbled upon this calculator while I was doing some preliminary research. It's definitely a good reference but as far as rubbing and actual fitment, of course it doesn't tell me. But thanks for recommending it Justnspace!

As far as my speedometer being off, I can live with that. Wouldn't be the first time my speedometer was off due to big ass wheels/tires.

But in terms of it been ugly as hell, I think that's kinda hard to measure and is a bit opinionated since one person may view it differently than another would. But thanks again for your input! I just want to know if its possible to fit 40 series tires with 20 inch rims on a stock TLX. I really don't want to be the guinea pig on this......

any time you deviate away from stock you are being the guinea pig...
the proper way of fitting tires is to use a tire with the SAME rolling diameter as stock...

it's up to you to do things properly, or not...
and I can tell you right away, 20 inch diameter wheels with a 10% increase in tire height will rub...
that's the whole point of the calculator...as it shows you with measurements on how extra tall it will be...

you can either take my advice...
or...
be the guinea pig.

up to you, my man.

you also do know that the middle number, the 40 series is a ratio between the first number the width??

the width plays a pretty big part in how tall the tire will be..
also to note, you didnt specify an offset on your 20 inch diameter wheels.

with these missing pieces, you cant get the answer you want.

this dude is running 245/35/20's

and this dude is running 245/35/20's up front.
he's running 275/30/20 in the rear.

EVERYTHING is pointing towards a /40/ series being too tall....
but you want to be the guinea pig....

^ Are those lowered? It looks like they are to me which means a 40 or 45 profile would likely rub.

But on a stock suspension, a 245/40/20 might be okay.

If stock tire size is 225/50/18, a 245/35/20 tire is 0.4% smaller than stock while a 245/40/20 tire is 3.2% larger than stock.

Pic of car with 20's on stock suspension.

^ Owner doesn't state wheel and tire size though. 235/35/20? 245/35/20?

Car below is on 20x9 +35 wheels with 245/35/20 tires and stock height. Look at that wheel gap. 245/40/20 looks doable to me if OP doesn't run wheels with too low an offset.

Thanks for the input AZuser. I feel like it would fit with no issues also but I have ZERO proof to support that thought, lol. I don't want to be the guinea pig especially considering this is my daily driver with no "back-up" car

Plus too you have to think about weight. I just got some 20” rims with 245/35 continental extremecontact dws 06 xl. The weight for these are 24lbs each. The 245/40 is 27lbs. 3 more pounds may not sound like a lot but when the weight is on the very end of the rotational mass like that is will make the car feel more sluggish (throttle response and acceleration) because the extra torque required to turn it. A heavier rim were the weight is toward the center has a smaller effect at 3lbs then a 3lb heavy tire will. But if that is not important to you then okay.

245/35/20. H&R sport spring yes on AWD it works. 1 finger gap front. 1.5 finger gap back. 8.5” rim width so tire not stretched.

235/40/20 would fit and only be 1.9% larger than stock.

The problem there is that there seems to be only one tire in that size, a Continental ContiSportContact 5P a max performance Summer tire that is $264.52 each at Tire Rack.

Those tires will definitely fitThat is not a problem you can just heat it up with th

I have 245/35/20 on 20 inch by 9.5 wheels. My tires are stretched and I do not like the look of it . So the size that you were looking for is probably what I’m going to go with . The only place it may rub is in the front the back part of the wheel on the plastic splash shield . That is not a problem you can just heat it up with the heat on and push it in a little bit
