Turbo on 2.4L
Have any of you put turbo on 2.4 inline 2017. I am planing to do it. Can anyone tell me about the pros and cons and which turbo to go for.
|
no one has done it on the TLX.
however, A LOT OF PEOPLE have boosted the K24. you wont get advice from here, you will likely have to go to another board...a forum that specializes in boosting k24's |
SEZAN, though it looks like you'll have to go to other forums to get the support you're looking for I do hope you'll come back here and share your results!!!
Sounds exciting to me. |
$20 says this doesn't go any further last OPs first post.
Not knowing the pros and cons of turbos, or asking "which turbo to go with" tells me he knows nothing about what he's about to get into, and thinks it can be done by himself for 6k or less. |

Why couldn't someone who's clever and good with tools work up a turbo install for a couple thousand dollars or less? I myself got a 1981 Formula Firebird that was ready to be scrapped for $150 and replaced rotors, brake lines, master cylinder and the engine and transmission all for a total of less than $300 by doing the work myself, borrowing tools like engine hoists that I didn't have from friends and neighbors, bartering some computer IT work in exchange for my co-worker's engine, getting some stuff from a junk yard. Doesn't really make sense to me that a decent turbo that's a good match for this V6 engine couldn't be found 2nd hand for a couple hundred bucks? It's neither made from gold nor has to be quite as high precision (or nearly as complex) as a fighter jet engine or something :P |
The most expensive part of DIY turbo is the welder. I want to buy a TIG welder and learn.
people are running eBay turbos reliably hitting north of 400hp. Specifically the gtx3582r which is a copy of the brand name of the same name. It is dual ball bearing, so it it like gold It's only $480 and produces up to 700hp Fab exhaust manifold. weld hot side, cold side. Plumb oil lines. Hook up intercooler And we're good to go. 400-700 hp |
What I really want to do is copy Volvo.
Take one one of their sequential turbos and put a compressor tank on it with a valve...no more turbo lag |

400-700hp eh? Maybe 480hp, tops, on stock internals. Likely not even that high. |

Why are we talking about a piece of shit 1981 beater, and why are we talking about make believe scenarios of building properly balanced turbos, able to spin at 80,000rpm? Properly executed turbo systems aren't cheap. Especially if you don't want to sacrifice a 2015+ car, with warranty still. Yep, in that case you're probably looking for reliability. What Justin failed to include in his break down is tuning, along with the equipment to be able to tune (hondata, whatever). That's where it all comes down to. Perfect tuning is not cheap. Neither is fabrication work. If OP is asking what the pros and cons of a turbo are, he likely has no clue how to fab even a door mounted coat hangar. And also, if someone wants to buy the Walmart equivalent of a turbo for their near new car, who am I to judge? Might as well camber the wheels to 20 degrees and put decals all over the hood while they're at it. Unless the OP really knows what he is doing, a 6000 dollar setup will be a ticking time bomb. What about supporting mods? A quality exhaust, hfpcs, and j pipe alone are 2k. Etc. OP is gone. This thread will fade to nothingness like so many countless other threads like this before it. |

as long as you are able to tune to the car, you could pretty much turbo anything for a few grand or less.
agreed with unless you have a spare car, one shouldnt be doing it to their Daily, much less a $40k daily still being financed |

Properly executed turbo systems aren't cheap. Especially if you don't want to sacrifice a 2015+ car, with warranty still. Would I do it on my new TLX? No, not unless I could afford to rebuild the engine, possibly more than once. Would I be happy with just a 100 HP boost? Absolutely. Under what circumstances would I be likely to install a turbo on a TLX? Well, that would be if I could not afford to buy a new Acura TLX when they finally release the (2019?) Type S TLX? Or, if I don't get some version of it or the CTR eventually. AND, if I had a 5 year old 2.4I TLX or 3.5L V6 SH-AWD out of warranty, then I would want to install a turbo. Not likely I will. But, if I had a group of friends that were into Honda tuning and mods, well I certainly would then and if I had to find a junk yard pull and do fabs/welding myself to be able to afford it that would simply be all the more motivation for me to want to add a turbo since that also means I can't afford to buy a car with that kind of performance from the factory. If I want Mustang V8 level power but in a German Performance Car quality vehicle, and I'm not made out of money, then I see my only option is getting a used AWD Acura and modding it myself. As to what I want for myself? I don't know how to achieve it yet, but I'd like to know - here's what I want: I'd like to add 15 - 20 lbs of torque at 1,500 - 3,000 RPM on my 2018 TLX without voiding the warranty (or making it so I can't easily put things back so it looks like the warranty has not been voided at least). From my novice perspective, I feel like I'm not asking much! But I get the idea that people are going to tell me what I'm asking for is not possible for a reasonable amount of money. |

I've had my car for 8 years and don't see replacing it for the next 8 years or more.
it could possibly be a project car by then |

Seriously, adding significant horsepower and tuning are not for those short of time or funds. |

But the very reason some people do it (and some of them succeed) is to get a car with performance equal to one higher than they can afford to purchase!?!
|
You can turbo anything with enough time and money.
|
I'm not even up to "noob" level yet, when it comes to performance mods. But, I think a 7 PSI turbo would be just about right on the 3.5L V6 TLX to give a noticeable boost (particularly to the low end?) without putting the car at too much risk of catastrophic failure?
I'm so sad that there aren't dozens of threads with TLX owners showing various turbo and super chargers that they've installed  |

You do see a mega shit ton of kits for the BRZ/FRS though. Or miata. Or STi. Or M3/M4. Or mustang. Or 370z. Or... Once Acura brings the sport back, you'll see manufacturers start pumping mods out, including forced induction goodies. |

I was with you until you kept "crying" about no support, etc.
if you want it, go out and get it done, son. |

if you want it, go out and get it done, son. Only reason I want a turbo on my TLX is that I'm too poor to buy a $10,000 more expensive car that "already has one" but the quiet smooth comfortable, yet still slightly sporty ride of the TLX appealed to me over the 2.0T '18 Accord... I really do like this car, just itching for a little boost. Until I'm so old that I'll need to have someone change my diapers for me, I'll still keep thinking about how to add a turbo to my car for under $1,000 total.... If only I'd bought the 2.4 TLX instead, the price difference would have been enough to cover an inexpensive Turbo install! Maybe I can rig up some home made nitrous setup for under $100? Don't worry, you're not gonna see some thread about "how do I clean whipped cream out of my throttle body?" |

When you try to cheap out on components and skills, you will get a shitty car. c'mon, you're old enough to know this. I have provided you with the knowledge. it's your job to put it all together |
I am old too
i have a 2.4 l TLX and Work on cars for a living. I bought this car to save money on gas from driving my 6 L V8 truck . The thing can boogie down pretty good I cannot see why you would want to put a turbo on it . I know for a fact it is not as fast as my Yukon and also I’m not made out of money but I know this car can take some other V-6 s . Just save your money and let’s enjoy being old |
By the way that does not mean I have not done anything to this car. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...384d25d8f.jpeg Just a peek |

Good thing I don’t care about that stuff anymore . What are you driving ? 🤣 |
I just don’t think that many people race cars around here anymore like they used to |
All the people that I know that want to race cars have real race cars . Whether it be drag cars or strock cars. I think at my age if you want to race you should do it legally on the track |
