SH-AWD on Ice
I had my TLX SH-AWD on the highway yesterday for a trip with 3 friends to watch junior hockey in a small city a few hours away from home. My longest highway trip yet. Very smooth, very, quick, good tax mileage, very quiet, all the things I have come to enjoy with this car.
On the way home late at night, we came across a portion of the divided highway that typically blows over. With warm temps during the day, and cooling temps at night, there was some apparent black ice on the highway. I slowed down to 45 -50 mph, particularly when I felt what one of my friends described as a twitching feeling, accompanied by periodic minor sideways slipping. A previous accident many years ago creates some instant anxiety in this types of conditions, a black ice incident that caused could easily have killed my young family at the time. A few cars and semis passed me going somewhat faster, seemingly having few issues on the road. I decided that caution was the best approach for the last hour of the journey home.
Having not driven the car at highway speeds on a road with black icy patches, I am at a bit of a loss to know if the twitches and slipping sensation I felt were related to how the SH-AWD functions. I suspect it would have been easier to experiment in daylight, but visibility wasn't the greatest so I plodded on at a consistent 45-50 mpg.
Anyone with experience in these conditions have any insights they can share?
